An overnight 'loose gravel' resurfaced road and heavy rain were the unexpected challenges which greeted the riders for the inaugural Mike Rutty Memorial RR promoted by Velo Club Bristol.
The first of seven laps around Chew Valley Lakes was run off at a tremendous pace with a number of riders being dropped from the off. With a rolling circuit, hard weather and primes on virtually every lap, the pace continued until a select group of three riders eased themselves off the front of the bunch on the third lap. James Cartridge (Adeo Cadence RT) was joined by two ex-internationals Rob Lyne (Giant/Halo Films) and Matt Rogers (BC Private) the latter riding his first race in eleven years!
These three worked well together but the bunch never let them go and the gap hovered around 20-30 seconds for the next two laps. Going into the last lap the gap finally grew out to 1 minute and it looked like the winner would come from this front group. Attacking his breakaway companions on the climb out of Chew Stoke, Rob Lyne drove onto the finish, with the lead tumbling down the other two were swept up a mile from the finish.
Rob Lyne held on for a great win, arms aloft 15 seconds in front of a greatly reduced bunch, with the sprint won by Simon Snowden (Adeo Cadence RT).
