British Cycling can today announce the dates and venues for the 2022 youth and junior national road calendars, including five new races. The Junior National Road and Time Trial Championships will take place in North Yorkshire, while the Youth National Circuit Championships head to Scarborough.
To support more riders to contend for the overall series title and reduce the pressure to travel to all events, the Youth Circuit Series will be decided based on a rider’s best five results (from the seven rounds). Similarly, the Junior Men’s National Road Series and Junior Women’s National Road Series will be based on a rider’s best eight and best four results respectively.
Youth
Contested over seven rounds, the Youth Circuit Series will open with a new race in Oulton Park – the Oulton Park Youth Circuit Races – on Sunday 10 April.
The series will then move on to the Isle of Man, Pembrey, Loughborough and Fife, before the London 2-Day event in Redbridge and Gravesend. The 2022 Youth National Circuit Championships will then take place in Scarborough on Sunday 10 July, having also successfully hosted the event in 2019, before the series culminates with the North West Youth Tour in Lancaster from Saturday 27 – Monday 29 August.
Junior
Contested over 10 rounds, the Junior Men’s National Road Series will begin with the Hatherleigh Road Race on Sunday 13 March and conclude with the Junior Tour of Wales over August Bank Holiday weekend. Two new races have joined the series for 2022 – the Velomax Junior Road Race in Bovington on Saturday 16th April, and the Junior Tour of the North West, which will take place from Saturday 4 – Sunday 5 June.
The same two races have also been added to the five-round Junior Women’s National Road Series, alongside the Hatherleigh Junior Road Race, Witham Hall Junior Road Race in Bourne, and the Junior Tour of Wales.
The national championships for time-trial and road will take place over the weekend of 28 – 29 May in North Yorkshire, using the popular Bulmer Bank circuit. The circuit was also used for the third stage of last year’s Junior Tour of Yorkshire, taking in views of Castle Howard en route.
For the first time, the Junior Women's National Road Series will also incorporate an under-23 Women's National Series. Opening the races to female under-23 riders will increase the number of riders at the events, helping to make them more sustainable, competitive and further raise the standard of racing.
British Cycling Road Manager, Kathryn McClelland, said:
“Our youth and junior road series have a phenomenal track record for shaping the stars of tomorrow, and I’m pleased that we’re able to present such a varied and comprehensive calendar for 2022.
“The changes we have made to deciding the series standings will ensure that more riders have the opportunity to challenge for the overall victory, and these form part of our wider ambition to improve access to racing and support more riders to fulfil their potential.
“As ever we’re incredibly thankful to all of the event organisers and our British Cycling Regional Events Officers for their work to deliver such high-quality courses, across the country, along with some exciting new races for riders to enjoy.”
