WXCRL Horton Road Race

A wet morning greeted the riders as they prepared for the race with the inclement weather causing a low entry on the day. The field was boosted by the appearance of Darren Kenny OBE riding a road race on familiar roads that he and his friends used to ride when he was younger. The race was handicapped with the 3rd and 4th cats getting a 5 minute lead.

The first lap was a bit cagey with all the riders being careful of the wet conditions. With the first lap done, two riders from the 3/4’s group went clear Richard Horton and Peter Bolke (DHCyclesport) getting a small gap but unable to persuade anyone else to come across and help. The E/1/2 group were working well together and by the end of the first complete lap, they had taken a minute from the leaders.

Rob Hurd (DH Cyclesport) continued his fine form by jumping across the gap on lap three and after making the junction, he was soon off again in pursuit of the leader (Richard). With the chasing bunch at about 40 secs, Rob caught Richard and passed him over the little climb just outside of Horton. As the riders turned into the finish straight, Rob had a healthy lead over Richard which on the line was 5 secsonds. We then had to wait for the chasing group to sprint up the rise where Steve Moss (Bournemouth Arrow/Hotel Collingwood) just outsprinting Bernie Charlick (CC Basingstoke).
