The Cycling Development North West League’s second event of the season was run off at Saighton around the Cheshire lanes on Sunday and the wide open plains allowed the strong north westerly wind to play havoc within the field and shape the race from the very start. The Motorpoint Marshalls Pasta Road Team was out in force as were Team Raleigh and Team Herbalife.co.uk.
Within the first lap of nine, all three teams had representatives in what was to become the winning break. Pete Williams, James Sampson and Malcolm Elliot for Motorpoint Marshalls Pasta RT, Richard Handley and Daniel Shand for Team Raleigh, Dillon Byrne and Jack Pullar for Team Herbalife Wheelbase.co.uk, with Neil Swithenbank for GS Surosa.

With the winning break gaining nearly three minutes by the second lap, it was for the rest of the field to make their race and there was no shortage of contenders, as one-by-one riders slipped off the front of the main field, collected themselves into small two and three man breaks that would eventually consolidat into two bigger groups. Simon Yates (Maxgear RT) joined German rider Julian Rammer and Mike Cuming, (both Team Raleigh) and Ian Bibby (Motorpoint Marshalls Pasta) to form the second group on the road and worked well together in the tough riding conditions.

The pace was high; the first three laps averaging 27 mph and only slowing marginally towards the tail end of the race. On the final lap, Handley and Williams attacked from the lead group and Pullar, feeling obliged to join them, tried with a valiant effort, only to pay for it, get caught and passed. As the bell signalled the last lap, the group was beginning to splinter and Williams soloed away with Handley chasing. Sampson marked his move with everyone else to follow. At the finish Williams came in alone with team mate Elliot not far behind and Shand taking third from team mate Handley.
