Juniors - Stage 3 Report

Owain Doull completed a hat-trick of wins for Hargroves Cycles in this year's Youth Tour by winning the third and final 90km stage in Ramsey. Doull won a two-man sprint against his breakaway companion Matthew Holmes (Team Wallis) to complete a perfect weekend for the three-man Hargroves team. Jonathan Dibben won Friday's prologue and Alistair Slater won yesterday's second stage and went into the third and final stage as race leader.

Doull and Holmes went clear on the first of six laps of the 15km circuit taking in the villages of Bride and Andreas. They maintained a lead of around a minute over the peloton which included the race leader. With two laps to go the leaders were 1m 40s clear with two chasers - Ryan Mullen (Irish National Team) and Josh Papworth (Cult Racing) - half way between the leaders and the main field. The chasers didn't manage to cross the gap and Doull and Holmes were still clear as they turned off the circuit at the end of lap six and onto the finishing straight on Ramsey seafront. Doull won comfortably from Holmes with the main field next across the line around 1m 30s behind.

For Doull it was a deserved win and a welcome change in fortune after a season blighted by bad luck. After a bad crash in the Junior Paris-Roubaix, Doull was hurt in a road accident with a lorry - so he was pleased to be back on good form and to chalk up his third stage win in all age categories in the Isle of Man Youth Tour.

The GC situation was yet to be confirmed at the time of writing but with the two breakaways both more than two minutes behind the yellow jersey at the start of the stage, Slater is expected to be declared the overall winner. If that is the case then this will be the first time one team has won all three stages and the overall victory in the Isle of Man Youth Tour's junior category.

Youth Categories - Stage 3 Report

Youth A Boys
Jake Kelly (Royal London 360) won the main race in the third and final stage at the Isle of Man National Sports Centre. It was a close sprint which saw Kelly edging it ahead of Jacob Scott (Planet X) and Tom Arnstein (Scotland Youth). Chris Lawless (BC North West Region), who led on GC going into the race and held on to his yellow jersey, crossed the line in 14th place.

Due to the number of riders in the Youth A category - and the tight corners on the 0.8km closed road circuit - there were two separate races held in this category based on the GC standings after stage two. The B race in the Youth A category was won in a sprint finish by Jack Sadler (BC North West Region) who finished ahead of Owen James (Towy Riders) and William Thomas (Velocity 3in1 CNP). There was no change in the top three on GC although time bonuses altered the final time gaps. Lawless won finishing six seconds ahead of Kelly with Arnstein third at 13s.

Youth A Girls
Halesowen A&CC's Emily Kay escaped from the main field to win by four seconds ahead of Kimberley English (Welwyn Wheelers CC) and Amy Hill (Newport Velo). Yellow jersey Alice Barnes (Motorpoint) finished 10th but her overall victory was never in doubt as she had a 1m 33s lead going into the final stage. The GC podium positions weren't altered by the final stage with Barnes remaining in yellow, Keira McVitty (Kings Cliffe Flyers) second at 1m 31 and Rebecca Hunt (Cardiff Ajax) third at 1m 52s.

Youth B Boys
Jack Escritt (Wolverhampton Wheelers) punched the air with delight as he won the bunch sprint on the final stage outsprinting his club mate Ryan Phillips and Stuart Balfour (Edinburgh Road Club). Youth B Girls
A one-two on the stage for Leicestershire CC saw Grace Garner winning with Charlotte Broughton crossing the line four seconds back. Third was Emily Haycox (Maindy Flyers). No change in the top three on GC and the final time gaps were as follows: 1st - Charlotte Broughton (Leicestershire RC); 2nd - Abby-Mae Parkinson (Aire Valley RT) @36s; 3rd - Megan Barker (Maindy Flyers) @2m 20s.

Daniel Tulett (Hargroves Cycles) made it a hat-trick of victories by adding the NSC cicruit race stage to his wins on stage two and the prologue. The final time gaps were as follows: 1st - Daniel Tulett (Hargroves Cycles); 2nd - Thomas Humphrey (Wakefield Junior Tri Club) @3m 5s; 3rd - Rhys Britton (Newport Velo) @3m 23s.

Youth C Girls
Jessica Roberts (Towy Riders) won stage two finishing more than a minute ahead of Lauren Murphy (Team Keyne) and Emily Tilett (Newport Velo). Roberts was just 14s ahead of Murphy but had a 2m 25s advantage over Tilett. There was one change to the top three placings on GC with Emily Tillett losing her third place spot to Eleanor Davies (Royal London 360). The final top three were: 1st - Jessica Roberts (Towy Riders); 2nd - Lauren Murphy (Team Keyne) @1m 41s; 3rd - Eleanor Davies @ 4m 27s.

Youth D Boys
Matthew Eggleston (Beacon Wheelers) won the stage finishing three seconds clear of yellow jersey Ben Tulett (Palmer Park Velo) and six seconds ahead of third placed Johnny Bouch (Border City Wheelers). Youth D Girls
There were big changes in the general classification following the NSC circuit race stage with Alderney Baker (Southdown Velo) moving up from third to the top step of the podium. Baker won the stage by 41s from Chloe Crellin (Royal London 360) and third placed Emma Draper (Royal London 360) who was just five seconds behind Crellin. Olivia Blaybrooke (Eastlands Velo), who started the stage in yellow, finished fourth on the stage and slipped to sixth on GC after losing 1m 38s to Baker. Final GC standings: 1st - Alderney Baker (Southdown Velo); 2nd - Emily Bridson (Royal London 360) @1m 9s; 3rd - Blae Cain (Royal London 360) @1m 10s.

Junior category - stage two report

Alistair Slater continued Hargroves Cycles' domination of the Sleepwell Hotels Isle of Man Youth Tour by winning this morning's second stage in Peel. His win came after Slater's team mate Jonathan Dibben had won the prologue time-trial last night.

Slater was part of a five man group which went clear with four laps to go of the 102km race on the Island's west coast today. Slater and his breakaways had established a lead of 1m 30s. Also in the group were two Dutchmen - Dennis Bakker and Kay Kistemaker both of the Sinnigebouw/Sleepwell Hotels Racing Team) - Jack Bowyer (Team Wallis CHH) and Luke Grivell-Mellor (Mid Shropshire Wheelers).

Over the final two laps yellow jersey Dibben attempted to close the gap in the same style which won him the Cadence RR last month. But on the final climb of the 1 in 14 Switchback ascent to the finish Dibben was still chasing the leaders when Slater attacked and finished ahead of Grivell-Mellor in second and Bakker in third.

Dibben finished around one minute behind Slater. GC classifications were yet to be confirmed at the time of writing. But with Slater only five seconds behind Dibben in the prologue - and with Slater gaining a 10 second time bonus for winning today's stage - it seems likely that Slater will start tomorrow's final stage in yellow. Bakker had a four second advantage over Slater after the prologue and will receive a five second time bonus for his third place today. But he looked to have lost around 10 seconds to Slater on the line.

The junior race concludes tomorrow (Sunday May 1) morning with a 90km race in Ramsey on the Island's north east coast. It will be 6 laps of an undulating 15km circuit which in previous years has often ended in bunch sprints which have not resulted in major changes to the final general classification. However, strong winds along the coast could be a factor tomorrow just as they were on today's stage.

DAY 1 - PROLOGUE - 29 APRIL

Junior Category Prologue Report

Jonathan Dibben (Hargroves Cycles) took a narrow prologue time-trial victory in the junior category of the Sleepwell Hotels Isle of Man Youth Tour on Friday (April 29) evening.

He clocked 1m 40s for the 1.29km course along the seafront in Douglas - the Island's capital - and finished ahead of Dutchman Dennis Bakker (Sinnigebouw/Sleepwell Hotels Racing Team) and third placed Ryan Mullen (Irish National Team). Bakker and Mullen both clocked 1m 40s and were separated by a fraction of a second.

Dibben will now wear the leader's yellow jersey tomorrow (SAT APRIL 30) for the second stage in the junior category which is a 102km race comprising 11 laps of a 9.2km circuit around Peel on the west coast of the Island. The start/finish line is at the top of The Switchback - a half-mile long climb with an average gradient of 1 in 14. In recent years the Peel stage has proved decisive in determining the overall winner of the tour. The junior race concludes on the morning of Sunday May 1 with a 90km race in Ramsey on the Island's north east coast. It will be 6 laps of an undulating 15km circuit which in previous years has often ended in bunch sprints which have not resulted in major changes to the final general classification.

The second stage in the youth categories takes place on the hilly Ellerslie circuit on Saturday afternoon with the third and final stage on Sunday afternoon on the 0.8km closed road circuit at the Isle of Man National Sports Centre in Douglas.
