Over 300 youngsters braved the weather over the bank holiday to compete in the 2011 North West International Youth Tour held at three different locations in the Lancaster area. Saturday saw the competitors race against the clock on Blackpool Promenade with the traditional prologue time trial. There were doubts if the venue was going to be used because of the high winds blowing in from the North Sea but the organisers deemed the track safe to ride giving the youngsters the opportunity to compete at such an iconic venue. Teams from Belgium.Holland and the Czech Republic were invited to take part in the three day event giving the U.K based riders the chance to compete with European teams and although the visitors came with strong teams the U.K riders were stirring matters up in every race.

PROLOGUE (BLACKPOOL SEA FRONT-BISPHAM/NORBRECK)

YOUTH A BOYS

Nathan Van Hooydonck (2.37.2 min) took the 2KM Youth A boys prologue by a little under two seconds from Germain Burton (Team De Ver) to set the weekend up for the Belgium rider, already well known in his own country, Hooydonck would prove too good a rider to lose the leader's jersey for the remainder of the race. Velo Ecosse's Tom Arnstein was the highest U.K rider in the boys prologue rolling in a credible fourth place.

YOUTH A GIRLS

Daphne Hommes (WRV De Peddelaars) took the honours in the Youth A girls prologue finishing one second ahead of team mate Kyra Lamberink. Alice Barnes and Emily Kay (Kurzulaub/Sigma Sport) were the pick of the U.K riders third and fourth respectively.

DAY TWO ( SALT AYRE SPORTS ARENA)

YOUTH A BOYS MORNING RACE

A flat, fast one mile circuit gave the riders the chance to stretch their legs on day two of the youth tour. The first race of the day saw the youngsters ride the track anti clockwise and with the group fairly evenly matched there wasn't any real chance of making a break off the front. Team Belgium pretty much stamped their authority on proceedings and controlled the race for all eighteen laps, ensuring their man Hooydonck would remain in yellow. A group of 72 riders headed towards the line at breakneck speed but it was to be Oliver Wood (Aire Valley RT) who had the legs to take a fine victory from Piet Allegaert (Belgium) in the bunch sprint.

YOUTH A BOYS AFTERNOON RACE

It was Oliver Wood who had the strong legs on the second outing of the day, taking another victory in the youth A boys race, moving the Aire Valley RT rider into second overall on G.C. just nine seconds adrift of Hooydonck. The course was reversed from the morning race but still couldn't offer enough to break the field up. Hargroves Cycles' Matthew Hargroves launched an attack with six laps to go which got the Czech team to chase down and such was the speed the field were strung out in one line. Attacks were coming thick and fast in the final few laps; Owen James(Wales) tried his luck and kept away until the bell when North West Region's Jacob Ragan jumped across. However it was the Belgians who were organizing the chase to keep Hooydonck leading G.C and the bunch came together in the final half lap for a bunch sprint. In the end it was Oliver Wood who for the second time took the sprint from Ludek Lichnovsky (Czech Republic).

GIRLS A&B MORNING RACE

Twelve laps of the Salt Ayre circuit failed to seperate the girls morning race even though attacks were happening throughout. An early attack from Grace Garner (Kurzulaub) tested the bunch but it was shortlived and things were brought back to an even keel very quickly. The bunch kept together for much of the race and it looked like a bunch sprint would be on the cards and indeed it was to be when Emily Kay upped the pace with two hundred to go to take the victory from team mate Grace Garner.

GIRLS A&B AFTERNOON RACE

The girls afternoon race was run very much as the morning contest. Small groups attacked from the gun but with the circuit so tight it was proving almost impossible to keep an attack away. Every break that went was soon chased down and again it was going to be down to a bunch finish. So when the bell rang the bunch, as predicted, was back together. It was Kurzulaub's Emily Kay that jumped out of the bunch to take an excellent sprint and her second win of the day. Team-mate Melissa Lowther finished in the bunch to retain her lead in G.C

DAY THREE UCLAN SPORTS ARENA

YOUTH A BOYS MORNING RACE

Heavy rain on day three tested the riders on the thirty lap UClan sports arena circuit. A slippy surface saw many riders hit the deck on the rain soaked tarmac keeping the medical staff busy. Even in the poor conditions the pace never slowed. Adam Toupalik (Czech) made the first move of the day but was kept in close check by the chasing bunch. Tom Arnstein (Velo Ecosse) upped the pace on lap four stringing the bunch out and by a third distance a lead group of around twenty riders had gained a ten second lead on the field. Small groups were attacking on every lap, the Welsh pairing of Matthew Cross and Owen James had a dig but the elastic wouldn't break and they were soon reeled in. With the race in its final quarter the bunch was back together and with the pace easing a little it was enough for a lone attack by Jacob Ragan (North West Region). Ragan soon had a 20 second gap on the bunch and the Czech team came to the front to lead the chase down on the bell. However the North West youngster held on to take the win on the line holding off Oliver Wood who thought he had done enough. Nathan Van Hooydonck finished in the bunch to take overall on G.C. from Oliver Wood by two seconds.

GIRLS A&B MORNING RACE

Poor weather continued for the girls race again making racing conditions quite tricky. A bad crash mid way through the race saw five riders go down on the bottom bend resulting in hospital visits for the injured. Racing was still close and fast throughout the race with Daphne Hommes (WRV De Peddelaars) making the first useful move on the fourth lap only to be brought back to the fold. A jump by Jeanne Korevaar and Corine Van Der Zilden (GRC Jan Van Arckel) a couple of laps later again didn't materialise into anything useful and the bunch soon reeled the two team mates back. With two laps to go Hommes had another go off the front but again the chasing group had decided the day was going down to a bunch sprint and it was Grace Garner who flew out of the bunch to take the win.
