Late Attacker Wins Hull Road Race
City Road Club (Hull) Road Race, 12 June 2011
Little Weighton, East Yorkshire
Report: Snowdon Sports
ATTACKING his rivals halfway through the final lap, David Shackleton (Wilson's Wheels) won the City Road Club (Hull) Road Race in East Yorkshire on Sunday.
Hull-based Shackleton proved strongest of the front men on the last of eight laps of a 7.5-mile circuit between Little Weighton and South Cave, as the pace caused the leading group to fracture.
Halfway through the race four riders went clear of the 54-rider bunch away and were eventually joined by another five. As the race went on more strong men bridged the gap, forming a 20-rider leading group heading into the penultimate circuit of the dry but exposed course.
On the last lap Shackleton attacked, and while he didn't disappear up the road he did just enough to keep his rivals at bay and crossed the line a couple of seconds clear of runner-up, Stuart Percival (GMC Fire Service).
Sheffrec CC's Daniel Storey from Sheffield was third, another couple of seconds off the pace as the leading few riders were strung out by the pace.
