Buckingham Wins Biddulph Memorial
Crow Edge, near Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, 33 miles
Promoted by: Huddersfield Star Wheelers
Event: 26th June 2011
Report: Snowdon Sports
JUST hours after flying in from Germany, Huddersfield Star Wheelers' rider Mark Buckingham secured victory in the club's Eric Biddulph Memorial race at Crow Edge, near Holmfirth, West Yorkshire.
Buckingham had been competing in a triathlon in Germany and landed at 4am, but still had enough energy left to take victory in Sunday's 33-mile race and repeat his 2009 win in the same event.
Hailing from nearby Honley, Buckingham was part of a three-man break which went clear on the first of six laps and established a lead of around 30 seconds which they managed to maintain despite hot but slightly windy conditions.
In the sprint for the line, Buckingham held off Dewsbury's Chris Fothergill (Sowerby Brothers RT), while Team Chevin's Michael Knight took third.
Two riders had clipped off the front of the bunch in the closing stages, and got to within 30 seconds of the leaders, with Yorkshire Velo's Nathan Harrison taking fourth ahead of Boneshakers' Phil Holwell, while the bunch came in another 20 seconds down, led in by Thomas Timothy (Velo 29).
