Chris Guy Wins VC Norwich RR
Wicklewood, Norfolk, 56 miles
Event: 10th July 2011
Report: Snowdon Sports
ICINI Velo's Chris Guy survived a near race-long break to claim a narrow victory in the VC Norwich Summer Road Race in Norfolk on Sunday.
Run off on a five-lap circuit based around Wicklewood, the 56-mile event attracted around 60 riders and sprang into life early on when Chris Guy broke away with Mark Howard (PCH UK Racing Team).
The leading duo worked well together and established a lead of around a minute and a half at one stage, with the bunch seemingly content to trundle around behind them.
However, the gap began to come down as they headed towards the final circuit, and it looked likely that they would be swallowed up.
While Howard dropped back to the bunch Chris Guy, 39 and from Great Yarmouth, managed to stay just ahead of the rapidly closing chasers and took victory by around five seconds from Finchley Racing Team veteran Lee Rowe.
With the 300 yards to go to the finish the race for the line was interrupted by a car which had parked on the circuit, and as riders swerved to avoid the vehicle four hit the deck, but thankfully were not hurt.
Guy was presented with the Reg Cogman Trophy for his win in the event sponsored by Norfolk Motor Group, as well as £60 cash and a £75 voucher for Pedal Revolution.
