Cumbernauld Centurions BMX club is jumping for joy as new £420k track plan is unveiled.
Cumbernauld will soon be home to Scotland's newest and best BMX track after work started on a new facility at Broadwood Stadium.
The track will accommodate racing up to and including Pro Circuit and Youth Olympic level.
It is the result of a partnership between North Lanarkshire Leisure - North Lanarkshire Council's sports and culture division - and local BMX group Cumbernauld Centurions, with assistance from sportscotland, WREN (Waste Recycling Environmental Limited) and Scottish Cycling.
Raymond Reid, Cumbernauld Centurions BMX Club chairman, said: "It is a significant milestone in bringing cycling to the forefront in North Lanarkshire, in what is a family-friendly sport that has something for everyone.
"Centurions BMX Club has evolved significantly over the last three years, from a select handful members to a thriving club of over 60, from ages five to 45, riding and competing successfully both locally and UK wide.
"The new facility will massively enhance the opportunities to participate in this Olympic sport for all.
"The course design is ground-breaking and caters for both expert and novice riders alike, meaning that there is no barrier to taking part, whatever your age.
"The new track will be the best outdoor track in the UK, bar none."
The track was funded via a £100,000 grant from the Legacy 2014 Active Places Fund, a collaboration between the Scottish Government and sportscotland, and an additional £50,000 from sportscotland's Sports Facilities Fund.
Councillor Jim Logue, chair of North Lanarkshire Leisure, said: "We've been working with Cumbernauld Centurions for over a year to develop the Olympic sport of BMX racing in the area.
"The Centurions is a well organised club with a growing membership.
"Its current site next to St Maurice's High School is below standard and restricted in terms of how it can be developed."
Broadwood Stadium is currently home to professional football club Clyde FC. But the club is looking into moving closer to its spiritual home in Glasgow.
Blane Dodds, chief executive of North Lanarkshire Leisure, explained: "Our goal is to establish Broadwood as a multi sports hub of national significance, which can accommodate a broad range of sport, leisure, health and fitness activities.
"We believe the new track will attract BMX enthusiasts to national, UK and international events including televised Pro Circuit Supercross and Elite races and potentially the 2018 Youth Olympics BMX racing."
