On a foggy and autumnal Sunday morning, 93 racing cyclists from all over Scotland participated and keenly contested the National Hill-climb Championship, hosted by Paisley Velo Race Team. The deceptively difficult route from Auchelodment Road in Elderslie onto the Gleniffer Braes was 1.9 miles in length and ascended through 500 feet.
The event was supported by many local cycling fans and even had a surprise appearance from ‘The Devil’, a traditional visitor to cycling hill-climbs. Local bike firms, Qbikes, Thomson’s and Visual Bike Fit were the sponsors and the volunteer officials and timekeepers were under the auspices of Scottish Cycling.

Steven Lawley (KTM) won the men’s event in 6 minutes 10secs. Arthur Doyle (Dooley’s Cycles) was second and Chris Smart (Paisley Velo Race Team) third.

Lynsey Curran (Dooley’s Cycles) won the women’s event in 7 minutes 55secs. Toni McIntosh (Ayr Roads) was second and Juliana Rourke (Edinburgh Road Club) was third.
First Youth was Calum Johnston (Glasgow Riderz) in 7 minutes 25secs and First Junior was Andy Brown (Glasgow Cycle) in 6 minutes 59secs.
Ayr Roads (Toni McIntosh & Janet Erskine) won the Women’s Team prize and Paisley Velo Race Team (Chris Smart, Jamie Kennedy and Dave McCormack) won the Men’s Team prize.
