Lining up for the tour will offer a platform for homegrown talent and provide inspiration to future generations of young bike riders. Scottish Cycling Endurance Coach Mark McKay feels that having a Scotland team racing in the tour will have a lasting impact on the sport.
He said, "The new Women’s Tour of Scotland will be a chance to showcase the top of our sport to a new audience that could attract and inspire more people – especially young girls – to take up cycle sport. The event also gives us the opportunity to further grow our performance development pathway by giving some of the athletes that we work with access to a higher level of competition that they might not otherwise get."
The team will be led by Olympic and Commonwealth Games champion Katie Archibald who has been an enthusiastic supporter of the Women's Tour of Scotland since it was first announced, appreciating the opportunity to race on home roads for equal prize money to a men's race of this level.
"How special to compete in a UCI road race at home. I'll be with teammates I know well, and in Scottish kit which is always something to treasure. The racing will be hard but I can't wait to lay down our best for home crowds."
For Glasgow born Jennifer George this race is going to be an emotional one.
"The importance of this event didn't really hit me until I recce'd the route. As I descended Dukes Pass and passed places which hold childhood memories I got a lump in my throat. It's going to be an absolute thrill to race against some of the world's best on roads I'm so familiar with."
Jenny Holl from Blairdrummond said,
"I’m really looking forward to racing on my home roads in Scotland kit and hoping for some exciting racing."
Sophie Lankford can't wait to be part of the team and experience everything the Women's Tour of Scotland has to offer.
“It means a lot for me to represent Scotland for the first time in my cycling career, it’s something that I’ve always wanted to do, so I feel honoured to have the opportunity. It’s great to have the race, which is paving the way for women’s cycling and demonstrating that we can have a stand alone event. This year has been a big learning curve for me and I’m looking forward to being part of a really strong team, where I hope to learn from them and gain more experience. All in all, I’m very excited!”
