At the heart of cycling in Scotland are our clubs; they are the key driver in the growth, development and success of the sport. In order to support these clubs, Scottish Cycling are making bold moves to focus on club development; a dedicated and skilled Club Development Team, underpinned by significant investment in resources that will empower clubs to develop and enable them to achieve their ambitions.

We understand that clubs have different ambitions and are passionate about their members getting the most from the sport and cycling overall. It is for that reason we have created a Club Development Framework which provides a flexible, clear and focussed approach to improving your club setting and help establish priorities for progression.

The Scottish Cycling Club Development Framework follows the model of the sportscotland Club and Communities Framework in order to create a common language that will facilitate access to a wider resource. The framework provides a flexible pathway for clubs to progress and is supported by an extensive collection of templates, guides and case studies that will help facilitate the journey.

Our Club Progression Programme will provide 1:1 support from our Club Development Managers to clubs, at a pace that suits their needs. By 2023, the Club Development Managers will have worked directly with 20 clubs across Scotland. A series of workshops, coach education programmes and priority access to resources will allow clubs to create a plan for their development.

Two distinct modules will provide the basis for clubs on this programme: Cycle Sport and Cycling for All. Clubs will be able to use elements from each module to develop a programme to suit their needs.

Cycle Sport Module – this will include the following:

  • Coaching/Leadership qualifications, Enhance Development Programme, CPD workshops
  • Developing Club Coaching Structures that support your club requirements
  • Head Coach Programme to train head coaches with the skills to fulfil this role
  • Support to improve your club’s ability to attract investment

Cycling for All Module – this will include the following:

  • A club philosophy that broadens the reach of cycling in the club’s area
  • Programmes that develop the knowledge and skill of clubs to meet the needs of their community and work in partnership with other organisations
  • Support to increase the number of volunteers into key roles at their club
  • Coaching/Leadership qualifications
  • Support to improve your club’s ability attract investment

On the 8th March 2020 at our Club Coaching and Development Conference we will be launching both programmes, taking clubs on the journey through our new Club Development Framework and setting out the application process for the Club Progression Programme. The Conference is open to all clubs and is now free to attend. In addition to the above, we will have a focus on developing a framework for club coaching, maintaining and individualising rider engagement and hear from clubs who have used direct club investment to take their club to the next level.

If you are interested in attending, please use the link here to sign up.

We invite you to get in touch before this date to discuss your clubs’ interest and help facilitate development of the resources.

We look forward to hearing from you.
