Scottish Cycling has today launched a new initiative, titled #BikeAndBlether, aimed at offering greater mental health support to clubs and individuals.

Last year, in partnership with SAMH (Scottish Association for Mental Health), Scottish Cycling committed to Scotland's Mental Health Charter for Physical Activity and Sport, and today is the next step on the organisations pathway to offer greater support in this area.

We will be launching a pilot mental wellbeing project that will seek to work with cyclists who would like to be a part of our new flagship #BikeAndBlether rides, focussed on supporting peoples’ mental wellbeing. We know that 1 in 4 people suffer from mental wellbeing issues, so it makes sense that we help to create the space in our clubs and groups to support those impacted.

In close collaboration with SAMH, and through a series of information sessions, we will be developing the knowledge and understanding of #BikeAndBlether volunteers to help break down barriers and reduce the stigma of having conversations about mental wellbeing. Alongside this, the newly launched SAMH Club Charter, will support clubs and groups in creating an environment to support mental wellbeing.

On signing the charter and today’s launch, Scottish Cycling Club Development Manager, James Bracher, said:

“I’m really proud that Scottish Cycling has committed to support the mental health of those who want to cycle. Poor mental health is a cross-cutting issue, so the action that we deliver for this charter will not only create positive mental health environments but will also help promote that our cycling community is for everyone. We’re committed to making cycling more inclusive and this goes some way to moving in that direction.

Since March, our staff team have been undertaking Mental Health training provided by sportscotland and delivered by SAMH. The next step is to help our clubs, groups and members develop this knowledge so that they can help people access the positive physical and mental benefits that cycling has on those who take part. ”

Head of Physical Activity and Sport at SAMH, Robert Nesbitt added:

"We're delighted that Scottish Cycling has chosen to join Scotland's Mental Health Charter for Physical Activity and Sport, and to really show their dedication to prioritising mental health through their work.

"Sporting organisations can create a warm and welcoming environment for like-minded people and can help to widen social circles, which is a great driver for breaking down the barriers to physical activity and sport.”
