Anna Fairweather (RT23) and Calum Moir (Zappi Junior RT) swept the board to take top honours at the Scottish National Omnium Championships in Dundee.

On a brisk morning the racing got underway with the Scratch Race, which Calum Moir was able to power away from the pack to take the victory and claim 40 points to kick start his omnium.

Riding with a Disc Wheel – always a bold choice on the outdoor track – Moir added to his advantage in the second race of the day taking took a lap in the Tempo Race to add another 40 Points to his lead.

To say the former Welwyn Wheelers rider had it all his own way wouldn’t be fair. The Men’s race was a tight battle between Moir and former Discovery Junior rider Danny Hedley (Royal Air Force CA) - who also sported a Disc Wheel.

In the final Points Race it was clear that a battle between the two would ensue. With Hedley taking an early sprint to cut Moir’s lead to a single point. Moir then attacked taking Hedley with him as the two managed to lap the field. Moir was able to outscore Hedley on the remaining sprints in the 16km Points Race and take the Double Points at the end to win by 11 points and become the National Omnium Champion.

The battle for third place was also very tense with Alasdair Baillie (Spokes RT) and Liam White (Torvelo Racing) getting into a chasing duo that would duke it out for the bronze medal. The battle went all the way to the line, with White just edging out the Spokes rider to claim the third step on the podium.

In the Women’s Omnium Anna Fairweather (RT 23) was able to power away from Fiona Walker (Walkers CC) in the first three events to build a small advantage heading into the Points Race. With a combined bunch with the Men’s – Fairweather was able to stay with the Men in the early laps and was able to lap Walker and maintained her advantage to claim the National Title.

There was a raft of young riders in the support events, with many racing on the track for the first time, in some exciting racing especially in the Keirin and Points Races. Results will be available here when ready.

A huge thank you to Discovery Junior CC as well as all the volunteers and officials for making the day’s racing possible.
