We are excited to announce the first seven awards from our Power of the Bike Club Activation Fund.
We invited applications from affiliated clubs who were seeking support with activities that they are delivering this summer before, during and after the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships.
We want to ensure that Clubs can crack on with their plans as soon as possible, as we’re supporting activity taking place between June and September, so will continue making awards on an ongoing basis. The fund remains open so if you haven’t yet applied, there is still an opportunity to share with us your plans and how the fund can support. Please note however, that the fund is limited and once fully allocated it will close, so please don’t delay!
While we provided some ideas of potential projects that could be delivered, now that we have received applications, we wanted to give you a flavour of what other clubs have planned – hopefully this will help aid your planning!
Discovery Junior Cycling Club are planning 4 coaching sessions focusing on MTB XC. They will be open to all current and new members with the sessions catering for all abilities. We’re supporting the club to bring in specialist coaches to deliver the sessions.
Elgin Cycling Club are running a week of cycling activities entitled ‘Power of the Bike Week’. The week will involve a mixture of racing, club rides and fun activities. The aim is to get everyone of all abilities involved and to have fun on their bikes. We are helping them to cover the cost of venue hire, BBQ for the volunteers and riders, refreshments and bike hire.
Glasgow Green Cycle Club are holding a memorial race day in honour of their Club Honorary President who passed away 2 years ago. They are looking to put on 10 races over the course of the day at Fife Cycle Park for everyone in their club to be able to take part. They have asked for support to be able to cover travel to Lochgelly, spot prizes and refreshments for riders and volunteers.
Glasgow Track Racing Club are keen to provide Esteem service users & their staff with an opportunity to ride the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome prior to 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships. This will provide a social environment to people not typically engaged in sport. Track cycling is often exclusive by nature of its' high cost, so the club are passionate about providing people of all backgrounds with the opportunity to ride on the track. With the combination of Esteem & GTRC they believe this can provide an amazing opportunity for cycling to help people on the road to their recovery. The fund is helping to cover venue hire which also covers bike, helmet and shoe hire.
Hervelo Cycling are planning an introductory bikepacking weekend for their members. Led by a guide the club members will learn how to pack their bikes, how to navigate using maps/tech and enjoy being part of nature with a group. They hope that this will give the club members the confidence to try bike packing themselves or help organise more events of this nature for the club in the future. They have asked for support with the payment of the guide for the weekend.
Insch Cycling Club are planning to run two Audaxes (200km and 100km) to replace a very successful Audax that used to be run before Covid by Huntly Development Trust but it was never restarted. We are supporting them to bring back the annual Audax by helping cover the cost of the venue hire required for the event. They are hoping that this will attract a wide variety of riders from across the North-East and beyond.
Orkney Cycling Club are organising a Cyclocross ‘come & try’ session to give an introduction and encourage participation in the local Cyclocross league. Open to youth and adult riders, the sessions will be fun and informal with a combination of basic CX skills and bike handling activities. We are supporting by covering costs for the coaches, venue hire, marketing for the event and gift stickers.
