With under 30 days to go until the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships, we’re pleased to reveal the first Road Circuit qualifiers for the Race The Worlds Series Final.
With regional qualifiers taking place across the country through the last two months, the Road Circuit Series has now reached its conclusion, and we are delighted to announce the Race The Worlds finalists who will race the series final in George Square on Monday 7th August.
The first qualification event in the Race The Worlds Road Crit series took place on 1st May at Grampian Kart Club, just outside Banff, an exciting new venue for cycling. Lorna Breetzke and the Elgin Cycling Club did a fantastic job of hosting the first round of the series. 24 riders braved the brisk and windy conditions, and all finished with a smile on their face after some fun racing on the twisty circuit.
For our East and Central qualifier Race The Worlds headed to Linlithgow and the newly launched West Lothian Cycle Circuit, a fantastic facility made possible by the Cycling Facility Fund. Edinburgh Road Club hosted the evening of racing, with over 70 youth riders taking part. The new circuit presented an excellent challenge, testing riders physical and technical abilities.
The third qualification event was combined with a round of the Scottish Cycling Youth Circuit Series at Kames Motor Circuit on 10th June, hosted by Louise MacParland and East Kilbride Road Club. For the first time in a few years, the event saw full fields in the Under 14 and 16 Boys with new racers and non-club members across all categories inspired to take on the more established riders for a place at the Finals in George Square. The sun was out, and the racing was fast and competitive, with Erin Boothman coming out on top in the Under 16 Girls, just two days after her selection to represent Great Britain at the 2023 European Youth Games was announced.
You can see the best of the action from Kames here:
Kirsteen Durkin and her team from ActivFife hosted the final qualifier at the excellent Fife Cycle Park, in Lochgelly, which also formed event number three of the 2023 Kingdom Crits series. It was a well-run event in the Fife sunshine and gave a great introduction to quality youth racing for those who hadn’t raced before, with over 50 riders taking part – with a mix of ages and abilities. We’re sure that several young riders went home that evening bursting with pride about the medals that they had earned.
As part of Scottish Cycling’s Experience The Worlds initiative, Kirsteen and the team also organised various non-racing cycling activities such as bike football and other cycling games in a really engaging and supportive environment. It was smiles all around from the children that took part, along with the coaches that delivered the sessions, which provided an inclusive cycling event for all.

As Official Activation and Legacy partner of the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships, Scottish Cycling’s Race The Worlds series provides the opportunity for young riders to race on the biggest stage of all later this year, during the World Championships themselves. Each of the regional races were qualifying events, with three available places, per category, to qualify for the final.
