39 under 18's took part in round six of the South West Scotland Cycling Project race series. The event was a short course mountain bike XC held at the famous Ae Forest, part of the 7 Stanes MTB centres.
In wet conditions the under 8's & 10's lined up for 4 & 5 laps of the short course including some technical single track and a savage fire road climb.
A close battle ensured between Murray Fotheringham and Annan Youth CC's Coll Irving in the under 8's. Murray came out on top in the event, although Coll was happy to score enough points to take over the lead in the series points standings. Root Rats riders Murray Colchester and Alfie Grant followed home in 3rd & 4th.
Olivia McQueen from Annan Youth CC maintained her 100% record in the girls race.
The under 10's boys race was a 1 -2 -3 for the Root rats with Aaron Grieson taking his second win on the trot, followed by Kyle Colchester and vastly improving Sam Godfrey.
Polly Henderson from Stewartry Wheelers maintained her 100% record with an impressive win from Ariana Willoughby and Cara Ramsay from Root Rats.
The Under 12 boys were on the bigger more technical circuit and as ever proved the hardest fought battle.
Hardrock CC again came out on top with the impressive Loughlin Young finishing ahead of round 1 winner Lewis Martin. The Hardrock pair were closely followed in by Stepping Stanes riders Adam Burgoyne and William McCartney. Root rats riders Jamie Willoughby put in a brave performance to come home 5th whilst feeling under the weather. Lewis's 2nd place was enough to just stay ahead of Loughlin in the series standings. Under 10 girl Polly Henderson also rode and won the Under 12 girls race.
Root Rats rider Rian Hill held off visitor to the area James Thomson from Glasgow Riderz to maintain his 100% record in the series and Hardrocks Heather Thomson was very strong to win the girls race.
Super strong Under 16 Owen Young again romped away with the race ahead of Stewartry's Ben Sinden, Hardrocks Alan Thomson and Stewartrys's Morgan Mcconnell. A real battle is starting to emerge between the two neighboring clubs.
Ross Green run away with the junior race beating all the seniors and vets in the process with some impressive lap times.
The senior event was won by Dave Thornton from the Break pad with leader Ally Wight puncturing and having to retire.
The vets event was won by series leader Jason Sinden to complete a successful day for the Stewartry wheelers.
Hardrock had the last say though with Marie Young winning the ladies event.
Round 7 is a closed road circuit race at the Crichton campus in Dumfries and takes place this coming Sunday (22nd May).
Places are still available on the day and the event is open to all riders.
