The Scottish Power Youth Road Series moved south to Dumfries for round 3, hosted by Stewartry Wheelers and sponsored by Castle Douglas Cycles. Conditions were blustery but thankfully the predicted heavy rain stayed off.
First up were the under 10s. Oliver Kelly (Johnstone Wheelers CC) dominated the race leading from start to finish. Rhys Edwards (Edinburgh RC) took 2nd place, just in front of Christina McGorum (Peebles CC)
The under 12s race was much closer with Fraser Gault (Ythan CC) winning by 8 seconds. Behind him 4 riders sprinted for second place with Thomas Fell (Annan Youth CC) just beating Lewis Steele (Johnstone Wheelers CC). Not far behind was the winning girl, Elena McGorum (Peebles CC). Imani Pereira- James (Glasgow Riderz) was 2nd and her team-mate Skye Donnelly finished 3rd.
In the under 14 boys’ race, Alfred George (Discovery Junior CC) and Jack Cruden (Glasgow Riderz) lapped the rest of the field. In the closing stages, Alfie powered away to win by 30seconds. Jamie Penny (Discovery Junior CC) won the bunch sprint for 3rd place. It was a similar story in the girls race with Georgia Ferry (Glasgow Riderz) and Edinburgh RC rider, Anna Flynn lapping their competitors. Georgia pulled away from Anna in the final lap for the win. Alison Bryce (West Lothian Clarion CC) finished 3rd.
Not content with his win in the under 14s race, Alfie George took on his elders in the under 16s. He managed to break away from the bunch with Jonathon Hilbourne (Glasgow Riderz). Local riders, Lewis Martin and Thomas Ashley (Stewartry Wheelers) chased hard and caught up to the leading pair but could not stay with them. Alfie and Jonathon were together coming into the finishing straight and Alfie sprinted to take the win. Lewis Martin took 3rd place in a very close sprint.
Round 4 takes place in Glasgow on the 2nd July.
