Planning a cycling trip abroad? Here’s everything you need to know about taking your bike on a plane, from airline rules to alternative options. Plus, British Cycling members get exclusive discounts on Bikmo’s award-winning cycle and travel insurance!

Bikmo offers two types of insurance to protect you and your bike while travelling. Whether you need comprehensive cycle insurance for your bike and kit, or travel insurance that covers cancellations, lost baggage, and medical emergencies, there’s a policy to suit your needs.

Don’t forget about your existing Member benefits

As a British Cycling Member, you already benefit from legal and insurance protections.

Third-party liability insurance worldwide – Cover applies worldwide, though terms apply for travel to the USA and Canada and participation in competitive events abroad. Check out our website for more details.

Premium Membership personal accident insurance – Covers trips up to 30 days abroad, including lump sum benefits for overnight hospital stays, broken bones, physiotherapy, counselling, emergency dentistry, and more. Please note, personal accident insurance is not a substitute for travel insurance. More details here.

Book a service before you travel

Getting a service before your trip is essential so that a bike issue won’t hamper your holiday. Book one at your trusted cycle shop in advance so you don’t miss out. Checking tyres, brakes, and your groupset will give you peace of mind, and if you need any new gear or tweaks, you can get it sorted on the spot.

Make sure you have comprehensive travel insurance

Whatever activity you are doing on your bike, it’s vital that you and your bike are properly covered. Home insurance often won't cover you or your bike abroad, and there’s often a high excess and the risk of your premiums increasing in the event of a claim.

That’s why we partnered with Bikmo to offer British Cycling members a 10%* saving on Bikmo’s cycle and travel insurance.

Choosing the right Bikmo insurance for your trip

Bikmo offers both Cycle Insurance and Travel Insurance, so you can pick the right cover for your trip:

  • Covers your own bike and kit worldwide
  • Protection against accidental damage, theft, and emergency cycle hire
  • From only £3.73/month*
  • British Cycling members save 10%* when using the link above

  • Covers cancellations, lost baggage, medical treatment, and hospital stays
  • Protection while cycling and mountain biking
  • 7 days of European travel cover can cost as little as £16.85
  • Competitive Travel policies cover track competitions and MTB racing

How much does it cost to fly with a bike?

The main cost factor of travelling by plane with a bike depends on the airline you are flying with. Research the airlines that service your destination before you book your ticket and see which ones offer the best value for cyclists. Some airlines include bikes as part of standard checked luggage, while others charge an extra fee.

Sometimes, paying a little more for your ticket can be worthwhile if it means your bike is included in your baggage allowance. Check airline policies carefully to avoid unexpected costs.

Can you take an electric bike on a plane?

Unfortunately, you can’t take an electric bike on a plane because most e-bikes have lithium batteries that can be a fire risk. Batteries over 160WH are prohibited on flights. One option is to take your e-bike without the battery and rent one at your destination - just make sure to pre-book with a local cycle shop.

Alternative options for taking your bike abroad

If flying with your bike isn’t practical, consider these alternatives:

  • Bike shipping services – Companies like SendBike offer door-to-door bike shipping and sell cardboard bike boxes for convenience.
  • Bike hire – Renting a bike at your destination can be a hassle-free alternative, especially for shorter trips. Research rental options in advance to find the best fit for your riding style.
