Coaching in Context – Cyclo-cross supports the techniques and skills for cyclo-cross racing.
What can I do with the qualification?
On completion of Coaching in Context – Cyclo-cross you will have developed your coaching practice, applying new approaches to coaching riders in specific techniques for cyclo-cross racing.
Techniques progress from the foundation off-road techniques to include mounting and dismounting, lifting and carrying the bike, bunny hop, cornering, riding off camber and starts.
This is ideal for coaches who will be coaching cyclo-cross riders who are racing at a local, regional, national or international level.
Where?
Off road environment typical of cyclo-cross events including sections and features of different gradients, sections of off-road woodland trails, off camber sections, steep banks and steps.
Surfaces including grass, gravel, sand, mud and rutted.
Who?
1 to 20 riders per session.

Minimum age | 18 years |
Qualifications | Introduction to Coaching (Activity Coach) – Off-Road This qualification provides coaches with a remit to coach foundation techniques for off-road riding, enabling coaches to prepare for this next course. RPEL (Recognition of Prior Experience or Learning) - Introduction to Coaching Level 1 coaches who have completed this course will be able to apply directly if they meet the other requirements. Level 2 Coach/Club Coach We recommend all coaches have completed Introduction to Coaching – Off-Road but acknowledge that some Level 2 coaches with experience of the discipline can apply directly. |
Coaching experience | Coaches should have a minimum of 100 hours of independent coaching ideally in off-road cycling. This supports coaches in the development of their practice and understanding cyclo-cross riding and racing. Level 2 coaches without a discipline specific coaching qualification, should have extensive experience of cyclo-cross as a discipline. |
Riding experience | Experience of riding a cyclo-cross or gravel bike off-road. |
Equipment | A cyclocross or gravel bike in good working order, with two brakes and appropriate to the terrain used in the activity. You will also need a helmet. |
First Aid | It is good practice to hold a First Aid certificate, if you are coaching independently. If you wish to be covered by British Cycling Coaches insurance, you will need an Emergency First Aid. |
This course is the second module in the pathway, and you will be given a time limited remit to complete the full Coach Award with 18 months.
Level 1 and Level 2 Coaches accessing this module will have an additional remit and the ‘Coaching in Context – Cyclo-cross' remit added to their records.
