Saturday 26th March saw Newport Velodrome play host to over 100 Youth riders all battling it out in the final round of the highly successful Icebreaker Series.
The Series now in it's 2nd year has grown into one of the UK's largest Youth track cycling events outside of the National Championships. The Series will be back in 2012 and there are plans in the pipeline for an end of season series starting in October running through to December.
Series Organiser Michael Heaven said: This years series has been fantastic. The racing has been so good I doubt you would find better racing at a Revolution Series event. The Series can not run unless the riders support the events and this year we saw a huge increase in numbers compared to last year and for that i would like to thank the riders and their parents. I would also like to thank the local clubs and volunteers for all of their support. Without these people the series would not be able to run and the time and effort they put into the events is much appreciated. The Icebreaker Series will look forward to seeing everyone again in 2012.
Thank you again for supporting the series and we will look forward to seeing you all again in 2012

The second round of the Icebreaker series was the biggest one to date with 130 riders signing on to race. The day was full of fantastic racing action and racing incidents.
Once again the programme was set to focus on the endurance events; Points, Scratch and Devil races. The GB Talent team were alos in attendance, taking the profile of the event to the next level and encouraging the non talent riders to show them what they were made of.
The Youth A boys racing was always going to be an action packed affair especially with the Talent boys looking to prove their Talent Team credentials. Chris Lawless, Robbie Westwood and Zachery May all had a good day in the saddle swapping top three placings regularly throughout the day. Westwood who is the current overall leader was consistant enough with two 3rd places and a 1st in the devil to claim 2nd overall and maintain his series lead. Zachery May also had a good day with a 2nd place in the Scratch race helping him to secure 3rd overall but it was the impressive and strong Chris Lawless who claimed a 1st, 2nd and 3rd to take the round win.
The Youth A Girls may have been a slightly smaller field but this certainly did not stop them producing some of the best racing of the day. Emily Kay and Ellie Coster were in a day long battle for the round spoils. Kay and Coster are both renownd for their finshing speed and both certainly put on a display of power and good clean racing. Amy Hill was never far away from the two riders with three 3rd places to her credit. In the end it was Kay who took the round win with a win in the final event. Both Kay and Coster were equal going into the Devil and it went right down to the last sprint with Kay working hard to beat her younger opponent.

The power of Kay won the day
In the Youth B Boys Joel Partington was in dominant form, winning all three of his events in confident fashion. Using his power in the sprints to overhaul his rivals. Jack Plumley managed to secure three 2nd places and David Barnes was in 3rd with three 3rd places. The consistent placings did not mean the racing was uneventful by any means with Partington being pushed hard by Plumley and Barnes.

Emily Haycox was also in great from throughout round 2 despite being brought down in a nasty crash involving 5 riders towards the end of the first race. Charlotte Broughton put up a good fight against Haycox to come home in 2nd place with the 3rd place being comfortably secured by Abigail Dentus. The crash could have easily altered the final overall with the favourites all being taken out. Sadly Bethany Manley was unable to continue but the girls soldiered on and put on a great display racing much to the appreciation of the crowd.

Youth C Boys also saw a great battle between National Champs Tomos Owens and Fred Wright. Owens lost out in the first event finishing in 3rd behind Fred Wright and James Tillet. This set the 3 riders up for a good day long battle where Wright would go on to win the 2nd race with Owens in 2nd and Tillet in 4th. By the final event Wright had two wins to his name so a finish higher than 4th would secure him the round win. The 3 riders controlled the devil from the front and just when Wright looked to have the overall sorted, he was pipped on the line to finish in 4th. This mean that all Owens had to do was finish 1st to secure equal points with Wright and a higher final event position to secure the round overall and maintain his series lead. Tillett produced another great ride to finish the Devil in 2nd and secure 3rd overall.

Charoltte Cole Hossain was another rider on a mission to dominate her events by winning all three fromRachel Jary and Bethany Maunders. This gives Charlotte a comfortable lead going into the final round with Bethany Maunders in 2nd.

Results Round 1: more>>>
After a successful debut year in 2010; Round 1 of the 2011 Series proved to be the biggest and best round so far. 121 Youth riders from all over the UK battled it out over a series of events in attempt to take an early lead in the series.
The endurance based event is aimed to give the young riders the opportunity to blow away the winter cob webs. Blow away the cob webs they certainly did with some fantastic, fast and close racing action.
The Youth A Boys Omnium was won by Welsh rider Robbie Westwood of Cwmcarn Paragon. The Youth A boys had their work cut out for them with a series of qualifiers and finals amounting to the riders competing in no fewer than 6 events. This certainly pushed the riders to their limits by the time their final event took place.
Westwood was in an event long battle with a group of riders including Tristan Robbins JIF, Owen James Towy, Max Nethell AJAX and Jack Hoyle of team Terminator.

The Youth A Girls overall lead was taken by first year under 16 Ellie Coster of Newport Velo. Coster used her blistering finish to good effect to power past her rivals when it counted. Coster did not have it all her own way though and she had to wor hard to finish ahead of Amy Jacobs and Danielle Khan. The Points race was won by Bethany Hayward who slipped down the overall slightly after a 9th place in the Scratch race.
Youth B Boys was a close battle all day between Joel Partington Eastlands Velo and Jack Plumley of Welwyn Wheelers. Partington was the better finisher of the two and he put this to good use to overhaul his rival and take the early series lead.

Emily Haycox of Maindy Flyers was in a determined mood to make her fellow rivals suffer. Haycox used a mixture of attacking and sprinting to win all three of her events. Paige Millward put a good fight against Haycox with some determined racing but it was Haycox power at the finish that proved to much for her rivals.

The Youth C Boys was once again dominated by the ever impressive Tomos Owens of Mid Shropshire Wheelers. Owens was pushed hard by James Tillet of Newport Velo but it was Owens powerful sprint that helped him to reach the line first ahead of his rivals for all 3 events during the day. Tillett was never far from his wheel and round 2 will certainly be tougher for Owens as the fitness levels of rivals builds.
Tomos Owens was in impressive early season form
Jessica Roberts of Towy was following in her older sister Amy's footsteps by winning the Youth C Girls events. Roberts used her strength and power to finally over power her close rival Charlotte Cole-Hossain. The two riders had battled all day and it all came down to the final sprint in the final event for Roberst to be sure of the overall lead. Bethany Maunders of Maindy Flyers showed she had been working hard over the winter to come home in third place overall.
Welsh Cycling would like to thank the riders and volunteers for helping to make the day possible.
Welsh Cycling and the volunteers will look forward to seeing everyone at the next round on the 26th March.
