Women's Scratch Race - All Age Catergories
Sarah Storey (VC St Rapheal) powered to a convincing victory of the women's scratch race for all age groups. With a half a lap lead over the rest of the field by half distance Sarah was well on her way to achieve a full lap on the field. With 3 laps to go she started to look drained, but just held on to win in a time of 13.43.413 for 40 laps.

Men's Scratch Race - 60-70+
A fast pace was set by the men for this 40 lap Scratch race, Max Pendleton (Mildenhall CC) broke away from the field with 25 laps to go and managed to stay 40 to 50 metres ahead of the field for a further 10 laps until Dick Cubison (Sheffield Phoenix) bridged the gap after Max Pendleton started to tire. The rest of the field managed to catch after a further 3 laps, but at this point the race started to fracture. As the bell was rung for the last lap, Thomas Demery came over the top and hit the front of the race at full speed and continued all the way to line. Time for race 13.33.604

Men's Scratch Race - 50-54
This race was fast and furious from the start and after only 7 laps Christopher Davis (Halesowen A&CC) launched an attack and increased the pace of the race. The move was soon countered and the field came back together swapping the lead on every quarter lap. Chris Davis tried and failed again at 19 laps to go. David Park (Scunthorpe Poly CC) along with Clive Burr (VC Londres) launched a mini attack at 15 to go however the long following train soon swallowed them up pulling the field was back together. Nick Yarworth (Malverncyclesport) made a solo attack with 6 to go and pulled away from the field but this was a lap too early and had started to struggle when the bell was rung for the last lap and the field, led by Mark Zaschke (City Cycle Centre) came over the top of him with less than half a lap to the finish with Zaschke taking the win.

Men's Scratch Race - 45-49
Alistair Taylor (Musselburgh RCC) was the only rider willing to take on this race as he launched himself off the front of the field after only 16 laps. The field was happy to sit back as Alistair increased his lead to almost ¾ of a lap over the next 17 laps. His solo effort proved too much and Alistair finally sat up and let the field drive past him. With the field all together the pace slowed a little which allowed Ian Greenstreet (Newbury RC) and Andrew Jackson (Go Sports Spex RT) to slip off the front for a few laps. They were soon to be joined by Stephen Clayton (Lichfield CC). Working together to maintain their lead they only now had to contest the final sprint, which Stephen Clayton won.

Men's Scratch Race - 40-44
The attacks and counter attacks started from the start of the race. One attack included Peter Georgi (Epic Viner RT), Roger Harris (Gloucester City CC) and William Fotheringham (Halesowen A&CC) after 12 laps and working together, they attempted to gain a lap on the field, but Fotheringham and Harris found it too demanding as Georgi break away and was the only one too bridge the gap and gain the lap and the race win. Ian Cooper (Planet X) tried several times to break away from the main field and when he was joined by Andrew James (Port Talbot Wheelers) they stayed ahead until the end to claim 3rd and 2nd places respectively.

Men's Scratch Race - 30-39
Although low in number the crowds in the Velodrome weren't disappointed with the final exciting Scratch race of the day. Riders attacked from the start but none were allowed to take hold until 10 laps into the race Jason Streather (VC St Rapheal) and Andrew Carnall (Agiskoviner.com) jumped off the front. Daniel Rudd (Arctic ET) and Ben Elliott (VC St Rapheal) chased them both down to bridge the gap and they were them followed by Chris Bush (VC St Rapheal), Ian O'Hara (Sydenham Wheelers) and John McClelland (Agiskoviner.com) coming together to form a small breakaway group. Carnall launched a solo attack from the group, which was to last for a couple of laps before he sat up and rejoined the original breakaway.

After a few rest laps Carnall went again only this time Daniel Rudd and Ian O'Hara saw the move and went with him and they built up a good quarter of a lap lead over the rest of the field. The main field weren't going to allow them to gain a lap so they raised the tempo and after 14 laps of hard pursuit they reel the three riders back. Ian O'Hara made a further two attempts to breakaway from the main field but both failed. With only six laps to go six riders had managed to gain a small advantage from the front of the field, Bryan Taylor (VC Londres), Boyd Roberts (Planet X), John McCelland (Agiskoviner.com), Oliver Davies (Dinnington RC), Ian O'Hara (Sydenham Wheelers) and Chris Bush (VC St Rapheal). The breakaway riders increased their lead over the remaining laps and had almost caught the back of the field as the bell rang for the last lap when the whole of the field sprinted towards the finish line. The leaders caught the back end of the main field with less than a quarter of a lap to go and Bryan Taylor just pipped John McCelland on the finish line after negotiating their way through the sprinting back markers.

Day Three

Pursuit Finals were the opening events on Day Three of the Master National Track Championships. The Women led the way with Sarah Storey (VC St Raphael) dominating the 30 - 34 age group with a 2.29.950. Only 2/100ths of a second separated Janet Birkmyre (XRT elmycycles.co.uk) from the 40 - 44 age group winner Claire Newland (Welwyn Wheelers CC). The Gold medal winner in the 45 - 49 age group, was Louise Schuller (Finsbury Park CC) whose time of 2.59.071 was a full 8 seconds ahead of Isobel Fletcher (Glasgow Wheelers) time of 3.07.803. Women's Points Race - All Categories

Even after 2½ days of exhausting racing Sarah Storey (VC St Rahpheal) was still in good form and dominated the Women's Points race. At the start of the race Christine Higgs (Maccelsfield Wheelers) had to take time out for a puncture but soon returned to the racing and even managed to pick up two points in the third of the sprints.
Sarah, however took control of the race after winning the first sprint and continued to lead throughout the race picking up 5 points on each of the sprint rounds.

Mens Points Race 60 - 70+

The mix of ages in this race didn't deter any of the riders from contesting for the points in the Sprints. The first attack of the race was instigated by Sandy Wallace (Sandy Wallace Cycles), who managed to get a ¼ of a lap ahead of the main field but his tired legs from the previous days racing couldn't maintain the pace and he was soon reeled back by Dick Cubison (Sheffield Phoenix), Geoff Brandt (Birkenhead North End CC) and Ed Demery (Bush Healthcare CRT). Not content with one attempt Wallace went again on the sound of the whistle for the first sprint, however this time his fellow riders were already charging after him and out sprinted him for the first set of points.

The race settled down for the next few laps with Kevin Gill (PCA Ciclos Uno) taking the 5 points in the second sprint. Trying to catch the main field napping Max Pendleton (Mildenhall CC) jumped off the front of the field, gradually increasing his lead with every lap and gaining maximum points in the third sprint. With only 3 laps to go it was obvious that Pendleton was tiring as his lead had reduced dramatically, Lance Ravenhill (Kenilworth Wheelers) seized this opportunity chasing Pendleton down, only catching and passing him in the very last lap to take the final 5 points. Pendleton held on to take the 3 points but this was not enough to ensure the Gold medal, that went to Ed Demery (Bush Healthcare CRT) who had scored points in all of the sprints.

Men's Points Race 50 - 59
Steve Davies (Ferryhill Wheelers CC) dominated the early part of the race. The moderate pace of the field helped him to win the first sprint from Ian Humphreys (Deeside Thistle CC) and claim 3 pts in the second sprint. Andy Laing (Musselburgh Roads CC) had barely crossed the line to take the 5 points in the third sprint when Graham Barclay launched a successful solo attack off the front of the field. Encouraged by the crowd, he successfully gained a lap and a crucial 20 points. With less than 23 laps remaining riders started to launch minor attacks off the front of the race in an attempt to win vital points in the final two sprints. Steve Davies clinched his Gold medal by winning the fifth sprint and Mark Zaschke (City Cycle Centre) won the last sprint.

Colin Parkinson (South Western RC) made an unsuccessful early attempt to breakaway from the front of the race, but he sat up after only a few laps and rejoined the main field. Steven Clayton (Lichfield City CC) won the first sprint of the race. With field settled, the riders tapped out the laps in between the sprints. Two riders rejoined the race after a minor collision. Alistair Taylor gained a lap during the closing stages of the race to take the win.

Men's Point Race 40 - 44

William Fotheringham (Halesowen A&CC) clinched the first 5 points of the race after a fast and furious start. Peter Georgi (Epic Viner Rt) jumped off the front of the field as the whistle went for the second sprint, he couldn't maintain the high tempo for that lap and lost the points to Paul Gittins (Ferryhill Wheelers CC. With 57 laps to go Andrew James (Port Talbot Wheelers) timed his attack off the front of the field to perfection. David Jack (Twickenham CC) bridged the gap to James, staying with him until the next sprint. James continued to stay just ahead of the field, when Elliot Davies (GB Fire Service Cycling Team) made it across to James. They worked hard together to gain a lap on the rest of the field collecting vital sprint points along the way, achieving their goal with 24 laps to go. With only ten riders remaining in the race the fight for the final points and positions became crucial, Anthony Nash (Scunthorpe Poly CC) tried to breakaway with 5 laps to go but was soon reeled back and the final points of the race were won by Derek Smith (City of Edinburgh RC)

Men's Point Race 30 - 39

This race started as it meant to go on with attack after attack from all the riders. Ian O'Hara launched the first one, gaining almost ½ a lap on the field, but he was reeled back in before the first sprint, which was won by Chris Bush (VC St Raphael). After 33 laps Jamie Streather (VC St Raphael) and Graham Lackford (Pendragon-Kalas RT) took off from the front of the field, but this move had been spotted by Oliver Davies (Dinnington RC), who bridged within the lap. The three leaders were joined by Chris Bush and maintained their lead over the field, however after a further 17 laps Streather was struggling, dropping back to the main field, leaving the three riders to continue driving on to gain a lap with 25 to go. With the main field fractured, the sprint for the points was open to any of the riders. In the remaining laps of the race Ian O'Hara tried again and again to gain a lap but was unsuccessful.
