Welwyn Track League

Despite the school holidays, the Assen Youth Tour and the European Masters Track Championships, the Welwyn Track League resumed activities on Friday after the previous two weeks were rained off. Tony Gibb increased his lead in the Senior A League but some attacking riding by a number of ‘young guns’ in the field produced some lively competition.

In the 10 mile, a group of five (Phil Hetzel, David Langlands, Robert Cox, Mark Baxter and  Tom Gosbee) went away before half distance and working well together opened up a useful lead. With 10 laps remaining, Tony Gibb towed Ollie Rossie up to the break and despite the attempts of the chasing groups the break had a lead of 100m as the bell sounded. Tony Gibb won from Mark Baxter and Tom Gosbee in an entertaining race.

Prior to this Phil Hetzel won the Devil with lone breakaway  and Tony Gibb won the 10 lap Block Handicap. In the Senior B League Alex Minting took the opening 10 lap scratch and the Odds and Evens Block Pursuit while Eric Gowland won the 10 lap Points race. The Youth A events were hotly contested with different winners for each of the four events. Ollie Fensom made a clean sweep of the Youth BC group in a depleted field.
