British Youth & Junior Track Championships

Day 3, Tuesday

Three titles were decided on day 3 of the Junior & Youth Track Championships and it was a good day for Wales where the titles are being held with two of the three Gold medals going to Welsh riders Jonathan Mould and Owain Doull and the other to England’s Emily Kay.

Junior Men's Scratch

L-R: George Atkins, Jonathan Mould, Dan McLay.

Welsh rider Jonathan Mould was the winner of a really exciting and brutal Scratch race ahead of Road Race champion George Atkins and Dan Mclay. To make the final, Mould and the rest of the 24 finalists had to get through the two heats with the first won by Sprint champion Kian Emadi and the second by Sam Harrison.

Whilst the heats were fairly tame, the final was anything but and by halfway, a lap had been taken by half a dozen riders including Atkins, McLay and Mould and the field had already seen at least half a dozen riders retire. After that initial frantic period, calm descended on the race from time-to-time before the attacks started again and more riders were shelled out the back.

With the riders who were a lap up in with what was left of the main group, almost half the riders who had started were either dropped or out of the race by the time the riders  entered the final few laps of their event.

After a lot of attacking in the closing stages by the likes of Tim Kennaugh and Simon Yates to name but two who were willing to have a go, round they came into the home straight for the final time, right across the track and through the middle came the local rider Jonathan Mould who held off the challenge from Atkins, McLay and Yates who had all shown how strong and fast they were during this punishing race.

Sprint for the line sees Jonathan Mould fastest ahead of George Atkins.

Under 16 Men's Points
Like the Junior Men’s Scratch race, the final for the Under 16 Boys Points race was also fast and hard and only the very best survived at the front of the race after a long day. Each of the riders had to qualify in one of the three heats before the final was contested by 24 riders.

Winners of the heats were Jess Wieckowski, Greg Brown and Patrick Galbraith but in the final, local Owain Doull was in great form winning two sprints and taking a lap and in an exciting final sprint for points, Under 16 Circuit champion Sam Lowe showed he’s no slouch on the track too when he was third in that final sprint to finish equal on points with Alistair Slater but with a higher final position was awarded the silver medal. Both Lowe and Slater had also taken a lap along with fourth placed rider Jim Lewis.

Under 16 Women's Pursuit
Two of the riders on the podium for this event had already won medals the day before in the Sprint, Hannah Barnes (Gold) and Emily Kay (Bronze) but in the Pursuit, both met in the Gold/Silver medal final after being the fastest two qualifiers.

Kay had been fastest in qualifying and was therefore favourite but Barnes is such a versatile rider she couldn’t be discounted and so it proved with Kay just managing to edge the Gold medal by a few tenths of a second from a very fast finishing Barnes who had almost stolen the race from Kay in the closing stages. The bronze medal was won by Lucy Garner who beat Harriet Owen.
