Brooks Cycles Newcastle Track League

August 29, 2009; Staffordshire; Thanks to Chris Pyatt

The penultimate round of the Brooks Cycles sponsored Newcastle Track League in Staffordshire saw the use of floodlights for half of the meeting as the nights start to close in on us again. A good turnout of 52 riders competed on the night with some great racing witnessed by the watching spectators and parents.

The highlight of the night was the final 10 mile scratch event in which track regular Adrian Adgar of Go Sport Spex RT put up a £20 first prize for any rider that won the event in under 21 minutes. This sponsorship came via his company, AA Installations Ltd.  As a result, the pace of the event was high throughout with the A Class riders maintaining a high speed with race winner Andrew Magnier crossing the line in a time of 20 minutes 44 seconds, to take the prize money. Adrian Adgar just failed to take the money himself as he finished a wheel length down in second place.

Andrew Magnier also won the 8 lap scratch, course de primes and the devil and in doing so has now taken over the overall lead with one race to go of the A class league. In the B class events, Martyn Shaw of Lyme RC extended his lead in the overall table due to the absence of second place Joe Turner.  Martyn won the devil and placed second in the course de primes and two third places in the 8 lap and 10 mile scratch.

In the Youth League, Sam Birchall joint top scored with Alex Taylor on 6 points as Sam was joint winner of the 200m time trial, team sprint and came second in the devil.  Alex was also joint winner of the 200m time trial and he won the devil event. In the final round of the Brooks Cycles sponsored handicap league, Tom Powell of Newcastle RC won in a close finish and so sealed second place in the overall league table.  Absent Joffy Houlton already had an unassailable lead in this competition and is a worthy winner of this season long competition.

In the Freewheelers League, the numbers were back up to just under 20 riders as the school holidays come to an end.  The top points scorers in each group are as follows:

Group 1 Joel Partington Eastlands Velo
Group 2 Sallie Birchall Lyme RC
              Luke Mansfield Newcastle RC 2001
Group 3 Megan Williams Lyme RC

All riders who competed throughout this year and any newcomers are invited to come along to the final meeting which takes place next Thursday, 3rd September, for the season’s finale which again will see the use of the floodlights.
