Round 2 Report:
Newport Velodrome was once again treated to an action packed day or racing with the 2nd round of the Icebreaker Series.

Youth C
With the Mayor of Newport on hand to get the racing underway it was down to the u12's to kick things off in style. Tomos Owens of Mid Shropshire Wheelers and James Tillett of Newport Velo were ready to do battle and establish a lead ready for round 3. Both riders were joint on points going into the 2nd round and they immediately got down to business.
Both riders never left each others wheels for the entire event and by the end of the day it was Owens who just managed to get enough points to put him at the head of the overall standings for the round ahead of Tillett. Going into round 3 these two will certainly be the ones to watch for exciting racing.

Cori Robbins in the u12 girls was in dominant form for the 2nd round winning the overall for the day comfortably from her rivals. The battle for 2nd and 3rd was a much closer run affair between Sophie Capewell of Lichfield, Mererid Hunt of Towy riders and Emily Tillett of Newport Velo. Going into the final event the Kierin either of the three riders could have moved into 2nd or 3rd place. The final sprint took place and it was Capewell from Hunt who gained enough points to get them in 2nd and 3rd on the podium.

Youth B
Once again the youth B boys produced some of the best racing of the day. Max Nethell cemented his lead at the head of the overall standings by taking the top spot in all three events ahead of Newport Velo's Tristin Robbins. Tristin made it hard for Nethell throughout the days events but Nethell was in inspired form with good speed and class.

Emily Haycox of Maindy Flyers took the overall in the youth B girls to build a comfortable lead going into the 3rd round. The youth B girls were competing against the youth A girls meaning top 3 finishes would be a lot harder to come by for the youth B girls. This however did not dampen their spirits with Haycox featuring regularly at the head of the races.

Youth A
The Youth A boys saw a great battle for the top positions between Ed Bird of Glendene, Zachery May or Newport Velo and Cam Swarbrick Team Terminator. All three riders were always at the head of field in their events and the sprints to line were always a close run affair. May who is the youngest of three was showing the maturity and speed of his fellow, older riders. It was this track knowledge that would see him push Bird all the way to the line in all three events. Swarbrick was never far away from Bird's and May's wheels but it was Bird who would eventually finish the day on the top step of the podium after a fine display of speed in the final Kierin event.

Zachery May of Newport
Rebecca Hunt of Newport Velo was in superb form in the Youth A girls. Winning all three events, Hunt has moved herself into contention for the Series overall going into the 3rd round. Battling with Natalie Hill of Hillingdon Slipstreamers, Rebbeccas speed over the longer sprints proved just a little too much for Natalie to overcome leaving Rebecca sitting comfortably at the top of the results for all three events.

Entries for round 3 are now being taken. Closing date is the 12th March. Any entries received after this date will be returned and the riders will not be allowed to compete regardless of the two previous rounds.

23rd January saw Youth riders from all over the UK converge on Newport Velodrome for the first round of the Welsh Cycling Icebreaker Omnium Series 2010 in conjunction with Newport Velo.
With over 100 riders signing on to compete, the track centre was certainly buzzing. The crowd in the stands was building and the racing that was on display, was nothing short of what you would see at Future Revolution event or National Championship.
The events focused on endurance with the Scratch races taking place first, points race second and just when the legs are burning the Kierin was put in just to finish the riders off.
Youth A Boys
The youth A boys saw a battle between three local riders. Rob Westwood of Cwmcarn Paragon, Zachery May and Edward Bate of Newport Velo. Westwood was dominant in all three events taking first in all three putting him at the head of the omnium table at the end of the day. Westwood who is part of the talent programme demonstrated why is a rider to watch this year on both the road and track events. Local boy Zachery May who recently moved up into the youth A category proved that he can mix it with the big boys and come out on top. Two third places in both the Scratch race and Kierin put Zachery in 2nd place overall at the end of the day.
Edward Bate, also of Newport Velo was in battle with George Stevens of Halesowen for third overall at the end of the day. Bate managed to pick up a 2nd and a 3rd in the Kierin and Points to put himself one point ahead of Stevens.

Youth A Girls
The youth A girls saw the talented talent team trio of Amy Roberts, Sarah Crowley and Amy Hill fight for the top three positions in the three events. Sarah Crowley demonstrated her blistering speed in both the Scratch race and Kierin, taking first in both but a 6th place in the points race meant that her final overall would be slightly affected. Amy Roberts who was never far behind Crowley managed to pick a 2nd, 1st and 3rd to put herself at top of the omnium standings by two points. Amy Hill of Newport Velo was in an event long battle with Natalie Hill of Hillingdon Slips and Emily Kay of Halesowen for 3rd place overall. Hill who proved too strong when it came to final sprints earned herself a well deserved place on the podium at the end of the day

Youth B Boys
Max Nethall of Towy riders dominated the youth B boys category by winning all three events with a display of speed and power. Tristan Robbins of Newport Velo was never far behind though and gave Max a run for his money in the endurance events. Joeseph Wiltshire also had a good day on the boards by taking 3rd place in all three events to put himself comfortably in 3rd place ahead of Jacob Kelly from Lichfield who really tried take the racing to the Welsh top three.

Youth B Girls
The youth B girls were put in with youth A riders to help boost field numbers in both categories but also to give the younger riders the opportunity to mix it with the big girls, which they certainly did. Ride of the day went to Emily Haycox of Maindy Flyers. Emily has only just moved into the Youth B category and she used the youth A riders to her advantage in the endurance events to help her move away from some of her rivals. With 3 1st places Emily topped the final overall and it put her in the perfect position to take the overall series so early on. Ellie Coster of Newport Velo and Kimberley English of Palmer Park Velo battled it for 2nd and 3rd position overall with Kimberley taking 2nd in the scratch and points to finish a 4 points ahead of Coster in 3rd.
Youth C Boys
After an issue with the results in the youth C boys points race, Tomos Owens of Midshropshire Wheelers and James Tillett have now both been placed as 1st overall. Confusion with a rider being disqualified in the 3rd sprint of the points race, resulted in Tillet being missed off the score sheet for the sprint. The decision was taken to award both riders 1st overall and promote Joeseph Linehan of Palmer Park Velo to second overall. With Samual Tillett and David Barnes both tied in 4th place. The youth C category was the most fiercely contested of the day with 27 riders taking part. This category will certainly be one to watch over the next two rounds.

Youth C Girls
The youth C girls racing was not short of action even though the field size was relatively small. Sophie Capewell of Lichfield CCC and Jessica Roberts of Towy Riders both claimed 2 1st's and 2 2nd places to put them both equal on points but an early 4th position from Roberts just gave Capewell and extra point to finish ahead of Roberts in the overall. Cori Robbins of Newport Velo was consistant to finish 3rd ahead of Bethany Maunders also from Newport Velo.
Welsh Cycling would like to thank all of the voulenteers, officials and riders for making the event a great success and we hope to see you all at round 2 on the 20th February.
