Welwyn Track League June 11

Story posted June 14, 2010; by Peter Waghorn

Friday night saw another well attended meeting with some positive attacking racing especially by the young riders in the Senior B group of races. The 10 lap Senior Block Handicap, which pitted the Even numbered  A riders against the Even B riders with the latter given a 250m start the B group, set off at a cracking pace and a determined four rider break were soon circulating at a faster pace than the chasing A group.

The four were down to two after two more laps with Alex Anderson and Alan Trolove (both Youth A riders) working together and holding of the chasing group to take a well deserved victory by a comfortable margin. These two young riders also finished in the top two positions in the 10 lap Points race. In the corresponding Block Pursuit event for Senior A and B Odd numbers, once the A and B groups came together with four laps remaining, Vince Divine attacked and set off alone to take his first track win for a number of years.

Roger Woodford, after a year out of track racing, returned to winning ways in the Senior B group 10 lap Scratch and picked up places in other events and will now gain promotion to the A League. John McClelland, after crashing out in the 10 mile last week, won the opening 10 lap A Scratch, Devil and 10 mile bringing him up to second overall in the League standings.

In the three youth groups, there were strong performances by Sam Gilzean in the Youth A/B group while newcomer Jonathan Sjolin from West Suffolk Whs showed a good turn of speed in the Youth B/C series and is a rider to watch. The very competitive Youth C/D/E group produced three different race winners – Michael Parry took the 4 lap Scratch, Isabel Scott the Handicap/Devil while Alexi Edwards took the 3 lap Handicap and finished off the evening with a fine win in the 4 lap handicap with 5 riders crossing the line a few bikes length apart.
