Welwyn Track League July 23

Story posted July 26, by Peter Waghorn

Tony Gibb retuned to track racing after breaking bones in one of the evening criterium series some weeks ago and was soon back to winning ways taking all four senior events from League series leader JohnMcClelland with Alex Wise and Trevor Burke picking up the minor places. Veteran Mark Zaschke used all his experience in taking 4th place in the Devil and 10 Mile – useful practice and a pointer for the forthcoming European Masters Championship this week.

In the Senior B League, Lee Desborough returned to the track after 14 years absence and was soon in winning mode taking the 10 lap Points race and gaining third spot in the 10 lap Scratch. In the Group B 10 lap Block Pursuit, the Even numbers looked to have it in the bag with a lap to go but a do or die effort by Ben Bailey saw him take the win for the Odd numbers by 10 metres. Rod Kelson won the opening 10 lap Scratch in a tight finish with the top four riders within a bike length.

The Youth numbers were seriously reduced this week as most of the top riders were saving themselves for the National Circuit Championship at Redbridge Cycling Centre the following day. However, by a bit of judicial juggling of the programme, the remaining youth groups were combined to give two competitive four lap handicap races.

The first was won by Tom Street who is lying second overall in the Youth C/D/E series, chased home by Tristan Rayner and Connor Woodford. The second was won by Kathryn Anderson who led in a clean sweep of the first four places for the home club.
