Matty Lewis is now well ahead in the Freewheeler A Rankings but this didn't stop an exciting finish in the Italian Pursuit where his team of Claire Fielding, Joe Bolton, Seb Bacon, Connie Hudson and Joe Phillips narrowly beat the team led by Georgia Hilleard which included Will Manfield, Rebecca Simmons, Joseph Guy, Joseph Lister and Adam Phillips.
Inevitably Matty took the Freewheeler A Scratch but there was drama for subsequent places with Georgia Hilleard second, Joe Bolton third, Connie Hudson fourth and Claire Fielding fifth having come from the back of the field.
In the Senior events it was very much the case of experience overcoming youthful enthusiasm with Andy Jones (Wheelers), Nic Selibas (Birmingham CC), Kevin Payton and Isla Rowntree (both of Stourbridge CC) all doing well.
However it was the final race of the evening where Andy Jones really made his mark.
The Handicap race was extended to 20km with two intermediate sprints, one at 10km and one at 15km. Andy took an early lead and won the 10km Sprint easily with Youth Wheelers Ryan Phillips and James Ireson in second and third places.
Andy maintained his lead riding at a furious pace and it seemed unlikely he would be caught but he was denied the 15km Sprint in the last quarter of the lap before the line as he was overtaken by Jack Hibberd (Halesowen) and Rebecca Womersley (Aire Valley RT). George Moore (CC Giro) went on to take the race overall with Richard Walkerdine (Wheelers) second, Jack Hibberd third, John Cooper (University of Manchester) fourth and Rebecca Womersley (a very creditable) fifth place.
