Day 1 - 21 August 2011

The six day long National Youth & Junior Track Championships kicked off at the Manchester Velodrome on Sunday with the Under 12 boys and girls Omniums and the Under 16 boys Individual Pursuit.

The Under 12 girls Omnium opened proceedings and it was Jessica Roberts of Towy Riders who took the honours - her time of 2:11.291 seeding her first for the Sprint competition later. Second placed Charlotte Cole-Hossain of VC Londres was over a second back with a 2:12.525 but there was then a four second margin to third placed Sophie Williams of Newport Velo.

The Under 12 boys Omnium saw the expected head-to-head battle between Tomos Owens of Mid-Shropshire Wheelers and Fred Wright of VC Londres - and it was Owens that came out on top with a time of 2:03.362, a second or so up on Wright's 2:04.534. A whopping eight seconds separated the two leaders from third placed James Tillett of Newport Velo. In the girls Sprint round, Roberts, Cole-Hossain and Williams won their heats easily with Emily Tillett (Newport Velo) Lauren Murphy (Team Milton Keynes) and Carys Harland (Eastlands Velo) progressing to the semi-finals through the Repechages.

The boys' heats were anything but straightforward with failed gear checks being successfully appealed and heat 1 being run twice. Owens just held off Cameron Thomson of Palmer Park Velo (in both the Heat 1's) with Thomson making through his Repechage. Wright easily won heat 2 and Harry Yates (Lichfield City CC) and Thomas Humphrey (Wakefield Junior CC) joined in the semi-final by virtue of winning their heats. The remaining places went to Josh Fitton (Eastlands Velo), James Tillett (Newport Velo), Benjamin Hardwick (Wolverhampton Wheelers) and Halley Woods (Eastlands Velo).

In the girls' semi-finals, Roberts, Cole-Hossain and Williams progressed and the final also went to form with Roberts taking a close win from Cole-Hossain with Williams a little way behind. The boys' semi-finals saw Owens, Wright and Humprey through but, this time, it was Wright that took the win to tie the overall competition. The final event of the Omnium was the 500m Time Trial and, although Roberts won again - and clinched the overall Omnium title - with a time of 41.636, this time round it was Williams that took second with a 43.116. Cole-Hossain took third, though, on 43.247 which, with her two second places from the Pursuit and Sprint was enough to secure second overall, behind Roberts and ahead of Williams.

In the boys event it was Owens on top again, which was enough to secure the overall title from Wright. Tillett moved ahead of Humphrey to claim the Bronze.

The Under 16 boys Individual Pursuit was held in two sessions - either side of the Under 12 Omnium Sprint Repechages - and it was Tristan Robbins of Cardiff JIF's time of 2:24.711 that led for most of the 10 heat first session, before being pipped in heat 9 by Oliver Wood of Aire Valley RT who clocked a sensational 2:20.917.

In the second session, Wood's time went largely unchallenged until the final heat. Tao Geoghan-Hart (CC Hackney) and Luc Hall (Kuota-Spinergy-GSG) came closest with a 2:21.279 and a 2:21.767 respectively. But it wasn't until the final heat that Christ Lawless of Maxgear RT set off at a blistering pace in the final heat and kept to going for the full eight laps. His opponent in the final heat - Jacob Ragan of Teamwallis CHH RT was the only other rider to dip under 2:22 with a 2:21.784 - but Lawless cross the line three tenths up on Wood with a stunning 2:20.600.

The final was evenly matched, with both Wood and Lawless down on their times from qualifying - but where there was less than half a second between them in the heats, Lawless opened out almost two seconds as he took the Gold with a time of 2:21.130 to Wood's 2:22.906. Geoghegan-Hart had qualified third and held on to the Bronze medal in the minor final. The fifth to eighth rides saw a change from the qualifying order with Woolf leapfrogging May to take sixth behind Ragan with Robbins staying eighth.

A 12 hour session tomorrow sees the boys and girls Under 14 Omniums, the Under 16 girls Sprint and the Under 16 boys Scratch.
