Men's Scratch Race

Video: Men's Scratch Race - last 5 laps

Jon Mould made the efforts of his 100% ME team-mates count with a great win in a Scratch Race, which had seen his team going head-to-head with a determined trio of Science in Sport-com riders.

A fast but relatively quiet opening 15 laps saw little significant action. The 100% ME riders were clearly keen to set the agenda, all grouping close to the front and launching exploratory forays to see what reaction would come from the field.

With Peter Kennaugh not starting, the race lacked a stand-out favourite, which probably helped to keep everyone on their toes. Mark Christian in particular was very active at the front, as he and his team-mates pressured the field.

A quality group of Mark Christian, Josh Papworth, Adam Duggleby, Jon Mould and Adam Yates, finally went clear with 50 laps to go and lapped the field within 15 laps.

With the pace amazingly high, a slightly different group of five more riders went clear at 15 laps to go and rapidly gained a lap too as the main field seemed to wilt. This five consisted of Alistair Rutherford, Christian, Duggleby, Mould and Adam Yates - the latter four all claiming a second lap over the field and putting themselves clear and the only riders in contention for gold.

Rutherford did a big turn at the front to help Adam Yates and Adam Duggleby, but they could not prevent Jon Mould accelerating hard down the back straight to claim the win from Duggleby and Yates respectively.

Women's Points Race

Video: Closing Sprint

The women's points race featured arguably the classiest field of all time, with several world champions, including last weekend's heroine, new world junior Road champion Lucy Garner. It was two of those champions, Laura Trott and Lizzie Armitstead who set the early pace, moving smoothly into double figures of points after four sprints.

Joanna Rowsell then launched a fine solo attack, which forced Trott and Armitstead to respond, ripping the field apart in the process. These two went after and soon joined Rowsell, just as she was starting to fade, thus forming a quality trio.

However, the next sprint split them, with Armitstead going alone and making the bridge to the main field very quickly. She then injected pace at the front, making Trott and Rowsell work very hard to maintain their effort to also gain a lap. This they eventually did, followed by Dani King and Corinne Hall, the defending champion.

With 40 laps to go the race briefly settled down. Armitstead took the next sprint from Trott, over whom she then had a one point gap and this pair were pulling clear of the rest and looking the strongest two riders by a distance.

Another win for Armistead 10 laps later was so convincing that it must have disheartened Trott. The National Road champion was looking in superb form, despite a long season, perhaps inspired by her disappointment at the recent world road championships.

A third successive sprint win gave Armitstead a six point lead over Trott who was second, her 9th successive scoring sprint. But, for Trott, time was running out, with just two more sprints to come.

And so it was to prove as Armitstead made it four wins in a row, all but claiming the title by going into an 11 point lead.

Rowsell took the final sprint to claim bronze, with Trott second and the silver madallist. But Lizzie Armitstead had the luxury of cruising over the line in the bunch, knowing the title had already been sewn up.

After the race, Armitstead spoke to us - "I was quite surprised with my speed actually, I just raced, I didn't really have a game plan really, it's not often that you get to race a points race like that, it was quite nice to react to the race as it went along.

"I always prefer points races, obviously not in the Olympics anymore, that's why I prefer the omnium, it's so attractive to me of the women's races, that's why it's nice to remember that I can still do it, it's been a while."

Men's Keirin

Video: Hoy's amazing Keirin win

The Men's Keirin final produced one of the closest and most exciting finishes ever, with Chris Hoy, apparently out of the running half a lap out, going round the outside and blasting clear in the closing 30 metres to claim a brilliant win which brought the Manchester crowd to their feet. David Daniell hung on well to claim second ahead of young Philip Hindes who eclipsed a trio of Sky stars to claim bronze.

After the race, Chris Hoy said: "They made me work hard for it, with a lap to go I was fourth or fifth and I went the long way on the outside. It is world class competition here, to beat these guys and to start the season the way I hope to continue, it's a great feeling.

"I've really kept my head down and put the work in, I just want to feel coming into the Olympics there is nothing I would change. Tomorrow I've got the sprint and then the team sprint so that's the immediate future. "

Women's Sprint

Video: James v Varnish Final Heat 1 | James v Varnish Final Heat 2

Rebecca James is the new national sprint champion following a very impressive 2 - 0 win in the final over Jess Varnish. James put in two very rapid final laps to hold off Varnish - the first after diving under her opponent, the second leading out from the front.

After her win, Becky James spoke to us: "I'm really happy, I had a plan from the front to the back, I did my best and the outcome is what I wanted so really happy.

"I watch videos to keep my mind ticking over of what tactics I do, it's all worked out, they're all nailed in to my head, drilled in, I do it so many times, I'm like a computer."

Victoria Williamson was similarly on top in the contest for bronze, proving just too strong for Jess Crampton.

Women's Sprint Bronze Medal Final

Earlier, Becky James had too much punch for Jess Crampton and won both her semi final rides with ease, pulling well clear down the back straight. However, Jess Varnish and Victoria Williamson became embroiled in a much closer battle, Varnish taking the first ride narrowly from behind and just failing to repeat the same move in the second ride, after Williamson cleverly distanced her a lap from home. Varnish led out the final heat and just held on to win by perhaps a wheel after a fine last lap effort to get on terms by Williamson.

Paracycling Pursuit

Aileen McGlynn and Helen Scott took gold in a very closely contested Paracycling Pursuit. As is the way of Paracycling racing these days, this pairing had to go close to world record pace to secure the win, with Shaun McKeown confrming his promise with silver and Lora Turnham and Fiona Duncan completing a good night for the tandems with the bronze.

AFTERNOON SESSION

Men's Keirin

The Men's Keirin first round saw the majority of the favourites go through, though Ross Edgar, who always keeps the crowd on their toes, missed out and had to make his way into the second round via the repechage. The only other major drama was a crash on the home straight for Ian Henderson in the second heat - luckily neither he, nor the photographer he flattened in the process sustained injuries.

Women's Sprint

The four riders who will contest the semi-finals of the Women's Sprint are Rebecca James, Jess Varnish, Victoria Williamson and Jess Crampton. All four won their Quarter-finals in two straight rides, having also brushed aside their first round opponents.

Earlier Victoria Pendleton announced she would not be contesting the Sprint or Keirin - an official statement said she "is focussed on strength training this week as part of her preparation for the forthcoming Elite European Track Championships and as such will miss the Sprint and Keirin events at the National Track Championships. Victoria is making an exception for the Team Sprint to gain further experience with Jess Varnish."

Men's Scratch Race Qualification

Sky's Peter Kennaugh and 100% ME's Simon Yates, Tom Moses and Jon Mould are amongst the qualifiers from the first heat, after they were part of an 11 rider group who lap the rest of the field.

The second heat was soon whittled down to 14 riders, who lapped the rest of the field. SiS and 100%ME were the driving forces in the early stages and these two teams made sure all their riders went through to the final after also controlling the final sprint.
