David Daniell believes he has turned a corner in form following his superb display in the 2011 National Track Championships after a ‘frustrating’ 2010 season.

The 21 year-old finished second to only Sir Chris Hoy in both the keirin and sprint competitions of the British Track Championships eliminating defending champion Jason Kenny in the process. The former junior team sprint World Champion feels he is now carrying his hard work from training into competition.

“I think I got myself in to a bit of a rut last year. I’ve been training but unfortunately my form didn’t really come through the way I wanted it to,” the Motorpoint rider said. “I’d been struggling and this is the first bit where I’ve targeted it and it came through and obviously it’s paid off. I had a really good build up to it and I’m just so happy to finish second to Chris [Hoy].”

Looking forward, Daniell hopes to use his success at the nationals as a platform to state his case for a place in the British track squad with a European Championships and World Cup double-header imminent.

“Obviously we’ve got such good guys in the team. It’s getting monitored through training, through these events, so who knows? With the good performance I’ve put in recently and if I carry that on through training, maybe I’ll catch the eye of the coaches and the athletes and they’ll give me a chance. Hopefully I’ll get there, show them I can do it and it’ll be progression from there really.

“I take every couple of weeks as it comes; I train as hard as I can trying to get everything spot on, to give myself the best possible chance to show my progress. I just give 100% week in, week out and in each event like this I see how far I’ve improved and see what I can improve on.”
