Sir Chris Hoy proved the salvation of Great Britain on day three of the Kazakhstan Track World Cup as the nation endured another challenging day across competitions.
Three fourth-placed finishes in the women's 500m TT, women's team sprint and men's omnium summarised the racing to date, with British hopes struggling to take an illusive first podium.
Ed Clancy took an expected win in the final event of the omnium, a second up on his nearest rival in the kilo, but a string of mid-pack performances in bunch races left the European Champion out of touch and reliant on the performances of others.
Meanwhile, Becky James and Jess Varnish rode off through the B section of the sprint competition, gaining plenty of experience and pleasing results against good competition. The pair met in the semi-final, which was won by James - the British Champion going on to take the B final.
Dani King made a successful start to her first ever World Cup omnium, winning the flying lap and sitting second overall after the points race. Eleventh in the elimination dropped King to tied fourth with three races remaining.
But Hoy saved the best result of the day until last, progressing to the keirin final unhindered. While Jason Kenny went out through the repechage, Hoy lined up against Max Levy, Mickael d'Almeida and Sergey Borisov in the final; but it was Cristos Volikakis who took the win, Hoy's second place marking his comeback from illness at the European Championships.
