Sir Chris Hoy took the sprint gold to add to his keirin silver as Great Britain secured a further two medals on the final day of the Astana Track World Cup event.
Hoy, returning after missing the European Championships with a chest infection, overcame Russia's Dmitriev in the final without the need for a decider. Dani King claimed the silver in the omnium, a superb return for the continually impressive endurance rider whilst Becky James and Jess Varnish were unable to progress to the final six of the women's keirin though James secured ninth in the B final.
“Chris had a good comeback winning the sprint and finishing second in the kierin after being ill for the Euros, we’re really pleased with that,” said coach Jan Van Eijden.
“I think in terms of times we achieved what we wanted to achieve, we have got loads of numbers now we can take away and go forward to the next bit of the season with London then the worlds in Melbourne so we’re on the right path but there are a few bits we need to change.”
In a busy morning of action in Astana, Hoy progressed through to the semi-finals of the men’s sprint, overcoming Matt Crampton on the way. Hoy beat Crampton in the last eight with the latter finishing seventh overall whilst Jason Kenny was knocked out in the last 16 but ended with a second place finish in the B final picking up valuable race time in the progress. Hoy's fastest time came in the qualifiers with a 9:971.
Elsewhere, Dani King moved into second overall in the women’s omnium with a superb first place ride in the individual pursuit, averaging over 50km/h and well over half a second ahead of her nearest opponent. Becky James, who is gaining important experience after missing out on the European Championships, qualified for the second round of the women’s keirin through the repechage with Jess Varnish just missing out.
The evening session began with Sir Chris Hoy losing his opening semi-final sprint to Germany’s Forstemann before Dani King took sixth place in the scratch race, keeping her in second in the women’s omnium. Hoy then took the semi-final to a decider with a 10.153 in race two and booked his place in the final with a 10.520 in race three.
Becky James' medla pursuit in the kierin ended in second round with a fifth place finish in what has been a busy week for the 19 year-old, before she secured ninth overall in the B final. It was then the turn of the Scotsman who took the first race of the final before a period of rest as the women's omnium came to a close with Dani King finishing second in the 500m time trial to secure a silver medal in her first ever World Cup omnium. Hoy then sealed the title with a time of 10.428 to help Great Britain finish the weekend strongly.
