The first open event at the Bournemouth Cycling Centre saw a home win with Harrison Fielding of organizing club Poole Wheelers taking the Under 16 Boys competition in the second round of the Southern Region of the National Youth Omnium Series.
Under 16 Boys
A 4th place in the Points Race was as bad as it got for Fielding who dominated the competition on the steeply banked 250m outdoor track. Taking second in the Scratch behind Joe Truman of i-Team CC, he won the Elimination Race and the Sprint and came second in the 1km Time Trial to Thomas Scammell of Newport Velo who set a very rapid time of 1:14.4.
The Points Race got away from Fielding when a Joe Donohue of Fareham Wheelers and Thomas Saunders of i-Team broke away with two sprints remaining. They looked as though they might take a lap for a while and even after Saunders dropped off Donohue’s wheel, the Fareham rider continued to close the gap, getting within 50 metres before the bunch picked up the pace on the run-in.

Under 16 Girls
The Under 16 Girls competition was a green-and-whitewash with the four Welwyn Wheelers riders taking a 1-2-3 in every single event. Kim English took the Scratch race from team mates Bethany Hayward and Lucy Harper. Harper was eliminated three laps before the final three sprinted for the win but Chloe Evans hung in to ensure another clean sweep with English having to settle for second behind Hayward.
Hayward brought herself level on points with English with a win in the Points race with Harper again third – but English pulled ahead again taking the Sprint from Hayward and Harper.
Barring a disaster in the Time Trial, the podium was wrapped up and the only real question was whether Hayward could overhaul English again. It came down to tenths of a second with Hayward’s 1:20.7 two full seconds ahead of third placed Harper – but English was two tenths quicker on 1:20.5 and clinched the Overall.

Under 14 Boys
Despite a field of 16 riders, six boys dominated the Under 14 competition – which produced the closest finish of the day. Max Bergin of VC Londres won the opening Scratch from team mate Fred Wright and Welwyn Wheelers’ Jack Plumley.
Plumley must have been feeling the pressure from his all-conquering Under 16 Girls team mates because he fought back to take the Elimination race ahead of Bergin with Frank Longstaff of Colchester Rovers taking third.
Wright took the win in a fast, fragmented Points race with Plumley second and Bergin third. Plumley had to settle for second again in the Sprint – beating Wright this time but losing out to Bergin.
Going in to the final 1km Time Trial Bergin led on 7 points with Plumley on 8 and Wright not out of contention on 10. Wright’s 1:24.4 was only good enough for fourth which meant that the overall win was between Plumley and Bergin. The VC Londres rider time of 1:21.5 was two seconds quicker than third placed Anthony Anderson of Kingston Wheelers but Plumley clocked 1:20.8 to take the win.
With Bergin and Plumley tied on 9 points, the win went to the rider that finished higher in the final event – Plumley.

Under 14 Girls
There may have been only six riders in the Under 14 Girls event but there was plenty of good racing with the VC Londres duo of Charlotte Cole-Hossain and Rachel Jary dominating the early part of the competition. Jary took the Scratch Race ahead of Cole-Hossain and Lauren Murphy of Team Milton Keynes. Cole Hossain pipped Jary on the line to win the Elimination with Amy Smith of VC Jubilee in third.
It was Jary’s turn in the Points race, outscoring Cole-Hossain, who took second again, ahead of Smith but Cole-Hossain snatched the Sprint from Jary with Smith again coming home in third place.
Both VC Londres riders had 6 points going in to the final event with Smith in third on 13 points. She might have been just out of touch for the overall win but Smith stormed round in 1:30.1 to take the time Trial victory with Murphy second on 1:30.8.
The two Overall contenders were third and fourth – separated by just 0.2 seconds. It was Cole-Hossain though, that took third and the Overall win on 9 points with Jary second on 10 and Smith third on 14.

Under 12
Noah Ridgway-Brown of Preston Park Youth CC took the Scratch race in the Under 12 Omnium from Hayden Cassidy of Herne Hill Youth CC with Cassidy’s team mate Kareem Akinnibi third. The Under 12 event is for Boys and Girls and Ridgway-Brown and Cassidy were joined in the last three of the Elimination Race by Bethany Lewis of Palmer Park Velo. She didn’t quite have the raw speed to stay with them in the drag race to the line, though, with Ridgway-Brown notching up another win.
Alexander Griffiths of VC Londres took the Points race but with Ridgway-Brown second and Cassidy third, things were getting pretty close at the top of the Overall standings.
Cassidy’s chances of catching his rival were dealt a blow in the Sprint where Simon Bird of Lea Valley Youth CC took second to separate the two rivals, with Ridgway Brown again coming out on top.
With a five point gap, Cassidy was relying on Ridgway-Brown having a disastrous 500m Time Trial and in the end it was merely disappointing. 4th place was his worst performance of the day and his 45.3 was over two seconds off Bird’s winning time of 43.0. It wasn’t enough to affect his Overall win, though – despite finishing behind Cassidy (45.1) and Tristan Rayner of CC Ashwell (45.3).

Seven Under 10 riders - and one Under 8 – battled it out for honours in the youngest age categories with Joseph Latham and Harry Towning of Welwyn Wheels emulated their Under 16 Girls team mates, sweeping all before them with Latham taking the Scratch and Points Race and Towning the Sprint and 250m Time Trial. Euan Taylor of Bristol Cycling Development Squad spoiled their perfect record, taking second in the Points race and Ryan Hodkins of Poole Wheelers’ consistency saw him take third overall.
Sam Reed of Poole Wheelers may not have had any opponents his own age but he rode with the Under 10s and took a clean sweep in his age group.
