World junior champion John Paul defends the Edinburgh Grand Prix sprint title at Meadownbank this weekend against a field featuring riders from Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, as well as the Great Britain Academy and a strong local contingent.

Paul beat Spanish champion Itmar Esteban to win the title last year and the Catalan rider will be back in the Scottish capital looking to avenge that defeat this weekend when he will be a contender for the silverware along with Commonwealth medallist Dave Daniell and Welsh youngster Lewis Oliva.

A total entry of more than 70 riders has been received for a two day programme that includes the Meadowbank Grand Prix 10 mile scratch event as the finale to day one and the Derny Derby, a round of the British Cycling Endurance League on Sunday. Current leader John McLelland – a frequent and popular visitor to the Meadowbank Velodrome – heads a field that includes former pro Martin Lonie, German student Sebastian Pancratz, who won the Grand Prix last year, and Scottish prospect Greg Brown.

Also on the schedule for Sunday is the latest round of the British Women’s Omnium League match, with defending champion Janet Birkmyre among those making the trip north, while Commonwealth Games medallists Charline Joiner and Jenny Davis will be looking to post a home win.
