Report: Snowdon Sports

Martin Lonie (Dooleys Cycles) retained his Scottish Scratch race title with a lone attack with three laps to go which was too much for the late surging sprinters who just missed out on victory.

In the early stages of the 20km race it was juniors Mark Stewart (ASL360) and Finn Harrod (Discovery JCC) who were joined by senior Gus Gillies (Bicycleworks) with an early attack.

They were brought back which let Lonie, 33 and from East Kilbride, take the spoils just keeping off the expected late challenge from sprint guru Bruce Croall (City of Edinburgh) who took second spot.

Local rider Stewart recovered from his earlier effort to take the junior title from Zak Lonley, from Peterhead in second and Sean Noon in third.

Taking victory in the shorter women’s 10km event was Kirsty Howatson, from Refrewshire and winning the junior women’s event was Louise Borthwick (Edinburgh RC) with sister Emma taking the under-16 girls title.

In the youth scratch race championships taking the under-16 event was Matthias Barnet (Edinburgh RC) and the under-14 title went to Lewis Stewart (Glasgow Riderz).
