Following the success of Team Wales at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and the growth of cycling in Wales, Welsh Cycling with the support of funding from Sport Wales has reviewed its strategy for the next four years resulting in changes to the staffing structure of the organisation.
Welsh Cycling’s vision is to inspire Wales to cycle, whether that is social cycling, club cycling or achieving cycling success on the international stage. Welsh Cycling works towards the four strategic aims of:
- Every child able to cycle
- More people having the opportunity to cycle safely and achieve their personal goals
- Welsh cyclists achieving international success
- To become an effective and sustainable organisation that provides leadership and advice to those with an interest in cycling
In order for Welsh Cycling to reach its potential, significant changes in the staffing structure of the governing body have been introduced. This will provide young people and women with more opportunities to cycle and to work towards success at future Commonwealth Games, whilst continuing its work to help support and develop cycling clubs in Wales. Development
View Development Team Structure
The development department is still managed by the National Development Manager, but has restructured and expanded, and now includes all of our workforce programmes (delivered through our Workforce Officer) and two Women and Girls Cycling Development Officers.
The Welsh Cycling Development Team has also seen the introduction of a number of new posts. A Development Team Leader will manage the team of four Cycling Development Officers (CDO) and three Young Rider Development Officers (YRDO) to deliver the development programme on a regional basis (North, South East and South West Wales).
The Cycling Development Officers will lead on:
- Club development and affiliation
- Coach and volunteer development
- Membership, equality and participation
- Go Ride club development
The focus of the new Young Rider Development Officer roles will be to strengthen the Go Ride programme and enable us to deliver more activities to engage with under 18s in Wales, to increase the talent pool. This will include:
- Building links with schools and clubs
- Implementing schools and holiday activities
- Go Ride cluster sessions
- Go Ride Racing
With the support of the Sport Wales Calls 4Action funding, a women and girls programme, SheCycles Wales, will be rolled out across Wales and sees the placement of two part time Women and Girls Cycling Development Officers in North and South Wales. Under the umbrella of SheCycles Wales the core tasks will include:
- Increasing female participation and membership
- Develop a competition pathway for women and girls
- Implement British Cycling’s Breeze Network programme
Performance
View Performance Team Structure
In order for Welsh cyclists to continue to achieve on the international stage Regional Youth Coaches have been added in North and West Wales to increase the talent pool and support young riders through the performance pathway. The core tasks for these roles will include:
- Supporting the development of youth riders in road, track and MTB XC
- Support and develop club coaches based in the region
- Provide regional coaching sessions for Youth A and B riders in road, track and MTB XC
Corporate Services

In order for Welsh Cycling to become an effective and sustainable organisation for cyclists in Wales, the corporate services team has also seen changes in its structure. A full time Marketing and Communications Officer is in post to work across the whole organisation. The core tasks include:
- Improve communication and engagement between Welsh Cycling members, partners and stakeholders
- Support communication to event organisers and volunteers
- Raise the profile of Welsh Cycling
The Events Officer will work closely with the Marketing and Communications Officer to improve the promotion of events in Wales, whilst also working with the Finance and Office Manager to administer the events calendar.
The changes will help Welsh Cycling to continue to inspire Wales to cycle and facilitate continued success on the international stage.
