The fifth round of the British Cycling National Youth Cycling Series comes to Cardiff on Saturday 13 June as part of a bumper weekend of cycling in the Welsh capital.

Maindy Flyers Youth Cycling Club is hosting the youth event in the centre of Cardiff as part of the Velothon Wales weekend, with over 350 of Britain’s youth cyclists coming to the city. The course is a closed circuit around Alexander Gardens, passing City Hall, the National Museum of Wales and the Velothon Wales Expo Village.

Jo Phillips, Maindy Flyers said “We are excited to be hosting the national series in Cardiff. The city centre course will be challenging but fun for all competitors and we are looking forward to welcoming cyclists from across the UK to race at our home!”

Maindy Flyers Youth Cycling Club is celebrating 20 years of cycling this year; former-Flyers include world-class cyclists Geraint Thomas MBE, Luke Rowe, Owain Doull and Elinor Barker.

Racing takes place from 10.00am starting on King Edward VII Avenue, with prize presentations to be made outside City Hall in the afternoon.

We have 20 Go-Ride and Go-Ride Schools clubs across Wales who welcome young people to take part in cycling and have fun on the bike. We are passionate in providing opportunities for youths to compete and enjoy the sport of cycling and we hope this event will inspire more young people to take up cycling in Wales.”

Andrew Taylor, Event Director for Velothon Wales, said: “We are very much looking forward to hosting the British Cycling National Youth Cycling Series the day before Velothon Wales. These young, talented riders will no doubt put on quite a show for the thousands of Velothon Wales participants who will be in the Welsh capital ahead of the inaugural event. It promises to really add to the festival atmosphere we are looking to create and will give everyone a chance to see the next Elinor Barker or Geraint Thomas in action!”

The Velothon Wales will see over 15,000 people take part in the 140km closed road sportive across South Wales on Sunday 14 June, followed by the Elite Men’s race which leaves Cardiff at 12.30pm. The Velothon Wales Expo Village is open from midday on Thursday 11 June with a whole range of cycling activities available over the weekend.
