Victory on the first day was enough for Lauren Creamer (Pearl Izumi-Sports Tours International) to win overall in the Stafford Women’s Two Day, final round of the British Cycling Women’s Road Series.

The 22-year-old Birmingham rider was leading overall after the first stage by just three seconds, but fourth in the second stage was enough to preserve her overall lead, with victory on Saturday going to Jane Barr (Velocity 44).

A lone break gave the win to Barr, while second spot went to Lauren Theryn (Bonita Squadra) while Louise Mahe (Mulebar Girl) was third again, as she had been in Friday’s opening stage.

Set in the landscaped grounds of Shugborough Hall, the Stafford Kermesse once again proved to be a testing circuit of speed bumps, cattle grids and the occasional deer, but the smell and the smoke from the BBQ gave for a European flavour.

A small field didn't do the event justice but with eight riders from the top ten of the Series competing at the Commonwealth Games it would be left to a field of 18 to race for the honours over eight laps.

Jo Tindley put in the first attack of the race, the Matrix Fitness rider skipping off the front of the race coming into the grounds at the end of the first lap. Lauren Theryn went across the gap to Tindley but with the race leader attentive at the head of the bunch the break wasn't allowed to get very far.

With five laps remaining Mahe was becoming active at the head of the race and the pace would soon increase, the points leader lining out the field that saw a handful of riders having to find the extra effort to stay in touch.

The midway point saw the first real attack stick, Jane Barr coming into view alone, the Scottish girl putting in some 20 seconds to the rest of the race, a gap that would stick until the chequered flag with Creamer and Shaw controlling the race for the overall no one looked interested to try and bring Barr back and the Velocity 44 rider took the flag for a fine win.

Day One

Lauren Creamer (Pearl Izumi-Sports Tours International) took victory in stage one of the Stafford Festival of Cycling earlier tonight, outsprinting team mate Gabby Shaw and Team Mulebar's Louise Mahe in the final round of the British Cycling Women’s Road Series.

A huge downpour just before the start made the paved surface tricky to ride and proved to be the undoing of a number of riders throughout the night.

With a number of riders away at the Commonwealth Games and series winner Nicola Juniper not starting it gave Creamer the chance to shine away from team duties, and was active throughout the race.

A brisk opening few laps saw the two Pearl Izumi girls and Louise Mahe heading up the race along with a select group including Nicky Healy, Jo Tindley and local girl Maisie Duckworth.

Louise Borthwick was the first rider to crash on the tight circuit, coming into the pits area the surface proving treacherous for many and a lap out looked to take away the Scot’s momentum for a handful of laps before settling back in the lead group.

With some 20 minutes gone another crash in virtually the same spot as Borthwick saw RST's Amy Gornall roll into the pits to take a lap out but the youngster had some work to do with the field winding up for the second sprint of the race and it was Mahe who added the points to her total after taking the earlier gallop.

Mahe had the bit between her teeth and the pace was starting to heat up, splitting the lead group for a short time. Nicky Healy took to the front, the surface not looking to give the Mammoth Lifestyle rider any trouble leaning into the bends.

Mahe again moved to the front and the speed increased, the front group again losing numbers and with five minutes left before the countdown it was Mahe and Shaw who made the gap away from the field.

Creamer looked to be playing the team game on the front of the chase but with the lap board showing five to go the group was back together and with no one risking a lone attack the race came down to a sprint, Creamer making no mistake with her timing to take her first win of the season.
