Great Britain made their mark on a jam-packed day of racing following the rescheduling of Saturday's events due to bad weather in Pont-Château, France.
The Great Britain team took the extreme weather in their stride and closed out the weekend in style, with Zoe Backstedt taking the under-23 women’s title, and Cam Mason and Cat Ferguson adding silver medals to their collections in the elite men’s and junior women’s races, respectively.
Elite men
Cam Mason gave a career-defining performance to become the first ever Brit to stand on the UEC Cyclo-cross European Championship podium, with a well-earned silver medal win. The race began at a ferocious pace, which saw Mason in 10th place and team-mate Thomas Mein in 12th. By the third lap, on a very muddy course, the Brits found themselves in a large chase group around 21 seconds behind the leader.
Heading into the second half of the race, Mason looked to make his mark, working hard to close the gap to the leader, joining a smaller group just 15 seconds down. By the sixth lap, the young rider had really stepped up his game to break away from the group, closing the gap on race leader Michael Vanthourenhout to just 13 seconds. As the final lap came into view, and unphased by the treacherous conditions, Mason was clear of being caught and managed to get the gap down to just seven seconds, crossing the line in second place to earn a fantastic silver medal.
Thomas Mein put in a strong performance, but today’s conditions proved too much and he left the race on lap six.
Elite women
Anna Kay continued to show her abilities after a strong start to the season, with yet another gutsy ride. After starting in 17th place, Kay worked hard in the first lap to make it onto the back of the lead group, a position she maintained throughout the next three laps. As the leaders split off, Kay continued comfortably the chase group, moving into sixth position. She ultimately crossed the finish line in an impressive seventh place, hard-fought in a race that saw the Pont-Château conditions deteriorating as the race developed.
Under-23 women
Zoe Backstedt added a second European jersey to her 2023 collection, after taking the under-23 women’s European title in sensational style under tough conditions. Starting strong on the front row, Backstedt found herself in a lead pair, quickly riding away from the field with Marie Schreiber. Backstedt delivered a sensational third lap, the fastest in the race, to build a 25 second lead on her French rival which – despite a couple of slips – ultimately proved unassailable and she cruised across the finish line to take the win.
Under-23 men
After securing a silver medal as part of Great Britain’s relay team on Friday, Dan Barnes battled to 20th place in a hotly contested under-23 men’s race.
Junior women
Cat Ferguson made it a double silver weekend as she added a junior women’s medal to her team relay success on Friday. Positioned at the front of the race from the off, Ferguson steadily moved away from the pack over the space of face laps, making the silver medal her own. The second-year junior fought off a late charge from the Czech rider to secure her place on the podium. Team-mate Imogen Wolff continued her strong form, sprinting to a fantastic fifth place finish in the final straight.
Junior men
A very competitive junior men’s race saw Oscar Amey take the highest British finish with 21st place at his first European championships, with Lewis Tinsley close behind in 24th.
Seb Grindley battled through the field after a tough start to finish 37th and Jamie Stewart crossed the finish line in 52nd place.
