British Cycling is launching its innovative 2025-2029 Volunteer Development Plan today.

Following extensive consultation with our volunteering communities through roadshow events in 2024, our new four-year plan – which has been made by volunteers, for volunteers - shapes the delivery to the vast community of over 10,000 which we want to continue to grow.

The plan outlines our shared commitment to support, grow, develop and celebrate a diverse network of volunteers. We are clear on the importance of equipping volunteers with the skills and resources to ensure every role is accessible and rewarding, which will create a legacy where volunteers thrive as integral members of the cycling community, whilst also achieving the key purpose of the organisation which is to bring the joy of cycling to everyone.

The plan outlines how British Cycling will lead the way in volunteer engagement by placing recognition at the heart of the plan, empowering and celebrating our vibrant and inclusive community, showcasing the fun and rewarding nature of volunteering in cycling.

The plan focuses on three key areas:

  • To support and inspire British Cycling volunteers [From Volunteer coaches, Club volunteers, Officials, Community volunteers and young volunteers].
  • To grow our volunteer community and improve the diversity.
  • To recognise and celebrate our volunteers.

We will achieve these through innovations in our management and monitoring systems, developments in our training and support pathways, and improved celebration of the pivotal and fun work carried out across our volunteering community. By working together, we aim to create a cohesive and supportive environment across British Cycling, Beicio Cymru, and Scottish Cycling, ensuring our volunteers feel fully supported and appreciated.

Additionally, ongoing support and expertise from Sport England enables us to enhance volunteer training so our community are well equipped to inspire children, foster engagement, and promote a healthier nation.

Amy Gardner, Sport and Participation Director at British Cycling said:

“This is a plan for volunteers, which has been made by volunteers. Volunteers are at the heart of our cycling communities in all parts of Great Britain. You are British Cycling, whether you are a club volunteer, coach, commissaire, event organiser, ride leader, or Commission member, and your valuable time and dedication are crucial to the growth and success of cycling across the country. We simply could not bring the joy of cycling to all without your contributions.

“We are thrilled to introduce this new, innovative volunteer development plan to develop and celebrate the incredible work our volunteers do. We have listened to our volunteers and have ensured the objectives of this plan reflect this, aiming to provide a positive and rewarding experience for everyone involved.”

Sarah Murray, the 2024 British Cycling Awards Values Champion Volunteer of the Year and Breeze Champion, added:

“I really love volunteering. I get to see how much fun and joy from getting out on the bike brings to people when they have the opportunity to do so. It is absolutely amazing to see everyone come back with a big smile on their faces.

“I am really motivated to keep volunteering and putting on Breeze rides because I just love it. I have made so many wonderful friends from taking part. I continue to think of new adventures, places to go, and just have a really good day out.”
