After the Sydney Olympics (2000), the Great Britain Cycling Team, which had secured lottery money to fund its programme in the years leading up to that Olympiad, looked at ways of not just coaching British riders to win Olympic Gold medals, but also find young riders to carry on the good work of the riders in Sydney.
New programmes were created so that young teenagers could be given that helping hand to fulfil their potential and over the years, many young stars have been borne. Mark Cavendish, Ed Clancy, Geraint Thomas, Jason Kenny, Lizzie Armitstead and many more have come out of GB Cycling team programmes and gone on to battle with the world’s best.

The latest young rider to do that is Sam Harrison of Wales. The eighteen year old was a winner of a Silver medal in the Junior Omnium at the Track Cycling World Championships in 2010 (Italy) and followed that up with a Gold medal in his first Track Cycling World Cup (Beijing).
Sam has now been named in the squad for the Manchester round of the Track Cycling World Cup (February 18-20), the final one before the World Championships in Holland.
British Cycling caught up with Sam at a training session last week and spoke to him, his coach Chris Newton and teammates Mark Christian and Erick Rowsell, about that win in the Omnium where it takes far more than a little luck to succeed.
