There are so many disciplines in sport and recreational cycling, and you may not have a focus on a specific discipline. If you want to support riders in general bike riding skills, this is a great starting point. This option supports the foundation skills that are common across a number of disciplines of cycling.

The course does not cover all disciplines. If you have a discipline focus, you should access the appropriate Introduction to Coaching in that discipline, e.g. BMX Freestyle, Off-Road.


What can I do with the qualification?

As an Activity Coach in Cycling, you can support riders to develop the fundamental techniques for bike riding. You will be supporting riders in fun and engaging activities to develop confidence and competence in the foundations of bike-handling and riding skills.

What?

You will be qualified as an Activity Coach in Cycling and can deliver coaching activities to develop foundation skills for riding including bike-handling skills, gear selection, braking, cornering, climbing and descending and some group riding skills.

Where?

Any accessible traffic free and non-technical areas, e.g. school playing fields, closed road circuits, open access pump tracks and park areas. It should be rollable and is no more than 10 minutes walk from emergency access.

Who?

1-20 riders (children, youth or adults) per session.

Requirements

Minimum age 14 years*
Independent coaching at 18 years
Coaching experience Not required, but it might be helpful if you have seen or been involved in some coaching activity, even in another sport.
Riding experience Experience of riding a bike.
Equipment A freewheel road, gravel, cyclocross, MTB or hybrid bike in good working order.

You will also need a helmet.
First Aid It is good practice to hold a First Aid certificate, if you are coaching independently. If you wish to be covered by British Cycling Coaches insurance, you will need an Emergency First Aid.

This course is not discipline specific. If you decide to focus on a discipline after this course, you will need to complete the appropriate discipline specific Introduction to Coaching before progressing to Coaching in Context in any discipline.

How to book?

The full course cost is £185 for Introduction to Coaching in Cycling.

Please note the course price will be increasing to £245 from January 2025.
